EMA

I didn't even know ema existed while I was at college. I don't know if it did. My parents certainly weren't well off.

The way I see ema is it's just to make sure not everyone on a low income doesn't become a builder or doesn't go out to full time work after school. More likely if in a low income family if you ask me.

Ridiculous what i've been hearing though, £100 bonuses? £30 a week.

I worked 20+ hours a week plus about another 20 hours of courses, fit a social life round it, it does tired you out.
However, i'll make my kids work at college, i'm not supplying everything for them even though i could easily afford to i think you learn something from working part time at college and uni. Budgeting, the value of money, hard work.

£50 a week is ridiculous, I knew people who earned less in part time jobs when I was at college. £30 is okay at a stretch.

I get EMA and it's hardly what you would call reliable. You will rarely recieve it on time and in some cases, not at all.

They will do all in their power to try and stop you getting the bonuses and TBH, £30 a week is nothing. Barely pays for my lunch during the week.

You spend ~£6 a day on your lunch?

Also, I believe that when studying some trades, the EMA is £50. Some of my mates are getting that doing courses in electrics and joinery.

I'm doing an IT course. :(

theyl be doing apprenticeships . it aint EMA

EMA is a shambles anyway

a family with 3 kids but household income of 30 001 a year.... none of the kids would get EMA

a single mum/dad earning 29 999 a year .... the kid gets 30 quid a week and some silly bonuses

It's not fixed at £30. There are instances where the student will recieve £20/£10 a week EMA depending on income.

That's the College canteen.

have your rolleyes back

if you feel the need to spend 6quid on food a day then get a weekend/evening job to pay for it

your been given 30quid for nothing but are saying its not enough .theyre already giving you a free education so be thankful you dont have to pay for that aswell as your dinner

I get ALG and spend it all on computers, 24" screens and other stuff to amuse myself with just for going to college 3-4 days a week.

Life is hard.

Bwaha. :)

Haha. I didn't say I haven't got a job. I work part time in my local Bar. I was simply saying that for those who have to rely on the £30 and buy lunch from the canteen, it's a tight stretch.

But he will have to pay for it:confused:

Unless he becomes a doley he and his parents do and will pay for his education.

I dont understand the point of EMA, just because your parents earn >40k doesn't mean you get given £30 a week, I suppose it's required if you have to buy all your own clothes etc but I know few people who use it as its intented. (/grumbles about not getting free moneys...)
Yeah, bout that.

Something to eat at around 11.00 = £2
Lunch = £4

What do you get for £4/£2?

generraly though does mean your parents will be able to afford any school equipment you need.

EMA is silly, 1/2 the people in my IT class at college only came because of that sole reason, everyone else, who got on with their work got jack because their parents were earning over 30k (incl me).

Never got money of my parents unless it was for the bus sometimes, had to get a job in the end which i enjoyed :)
