Energy Prices (Strictly NO referrals!)

Looking into it, it appears that its mandatory to have them replaced when they reach end of life, legally mandatory I mean.

Part of the Electricity Act 1989 apparently

"Certification periods are allocated by OPSS and are restricted to 10 years for newly approved induction meters and for periods of between 10 and 20 years for static meters. Certification periods greater than 10 years (for static meters) are subject to the submission and validation of a component reliability model based on the Siemens Norm SN29500.

Subsequent in-service surveillance monitoring through the national sample survey or In-service testing can result in the certification life of a meter type being either extended or reduced. When certification is required meters must be removed from service when the certification period expires."

But does that necessarily mean a smart meter or could you just have another dumb one? I ask as my dumb meters are in tight spaces and I understand that you can't fit smart meters in these circumstances.

It simply means that the supplier must replace them legally, doesnt specifically have to be a smart meter but if thats all they say they have then it would have to be and I imagine they will say thats all they have
Thing is, it makes very little difference to you once installed. You just leave them be and stop submitting your meter readings that’s it. Great not to be bugged by then constantly. The small screen that provides the £x daily etc is not required and can be put away.
Yes but you are missing the point of what I wrote, I am someone who is a if its not fix dont change it person as I mentioned. Lots of things in my life wouldnt make a huge difference if I changed them, but I dont. The traditional meters I have had for 40 years in the various houses I have owned have been fine so I've not got much motivation to make a change from my norm. Having said that of course, it looks like its all a moot point as it doesnt appear that I have any choice now (which incidently is another thing that goes against my principals, having something forced on me whether I want it or not).

I have had a think. I think for me the best fit for now is just to go onto the octopus standard tarif. by doing this I can go onto agile export which is not available on octopus Go or Go Faster.

I may consider Flux in the future however Go doesn't really work for me now given part of Go fasters appeal was in winter doing the washing and ironing etc using the off peak power. I won't be doing that at 12am

I feel stupidly lucky to have gotten on the Octopus Tracker tariff the day before they closed new instant sign ups. The bill last month was half what we paid the month before (heating schedule the same and usage roughly the same)

Today's electricity price is 20.7pKWh - insanity. Gas is 6.5p.

Yep. Luckily got myself and my family on it. Made some nice referral bonus in the process too which was nice :p

I hear you. Agile even better - cheapest half hour last night was 0.2p/kwh (2 to 2:30am if I remember right).

A glimmer of good news for prepayment meter users, £45 per year reduction from July.
yes hopefully he declares leisure centres as valid essential energy users too - don't want to see our pool closing,

surprised rishis pool is electrically heated
is that as cheap as gas/octopus tracker, perhaps he couldn't afford a gas grid update, where are his pv panels/batteries
Keir should have some fun at rishis expense if they don't fix leisure centre rates

I’m currently on British Gas standard rate - Do I lose any of the government payments if I change supplier? Basically. If the rate/standing charge are lower, is there any reason why I shouldn’t switch?

I know that sounds stupid, but the whole situation confuses me.

whilst the look is certainly not great, its paid for out of his pocket, and may actually help his local constituents.
so sure, probably a few easy cheap shots and will make sunak look a bit of a hypocrite.............. but he isnt actually doing anything illegal. he is still a step up from others in his party imo. (pretty low bar mind you).
I think when it comes to throwing muck on these sorts of things politicians have to be pretty careful, because its a sliding scale really... i am sure someone like Greta T would be appalled at the carbon footprint of most of the labour members as well, so before any verbal shots are fired they will have to make sure they are not throwing stones in a glass house.
BTW
i too hope public pools are considered essential services as well.

I don’t get it, these kind of grid upgrades are happening everywhere all the time and they are not actually that expensive, particularly to a multi millionaire. It’s a total non-story.

All they would have done was probably swap him from single phase to 3 phase electricity (which anyone can do) and update his fuse to 3x100A.

They may have needed to update the transformer upstream but it’s not a significant job for the local grid operator.

Where people are getting electric cars, these kind upgrades are happening for ‘free’. Well the costs are being socialised, there is so such thing as free. While they are not getting 3 phase for the most part, a lot of new cables are having to be laid to support the demand, particularly where houses were historically on looped supplies.

The only irony is that he wanted to install a swimming pool, that’s fine but if he wanted to upgrade the supply for solar panels (even ground mount on a piece of scrap land on the boundary), it would be hard denied at the planning permission stage because the property is grade 2 listed.
