Guy at work has done it, funnily enough the same way I'd do it as well.
Run a spur directly from the incoming mains under the floorboards, what ever he plugs into it is free.
I mean how would anyone ever know.
Until it catches fire, burns down their house and the house insurance policy is void. All to save a few pounds

And if said person knew what they were doing as they do that sort of thing at work day in day out. Anyway, I don't doubt a lot of people are doing it.

Energy companies are entitled to make healthy profits. They're not going to give it all away for free.

As for stealing from the grid, no doubt it works until it doesn't. Not many have the technical knowledge and skills necessary to bypass the meter anyway. The utility companies will likely have many detection methods in place and probably know if there are discrepancies between meter readings of genuine customers vs total load on a specific section. It wouldn't take them long to detect, so only hope those stealing are prepared to eventually pay the bill and face criminal convictions.

prevalence of smart meters will put payed to some of these shenaginins - they can identify 'leaks'

don't understand all of this sympathy/love for Lewis ... he was championing / making money from people changing/flipping suppliers,
with their referral bonus's and introductory vouchers that was not an efficient business model .. he could have exposed that, before it was compounded by Ukraine situation.

It's like the banking models where people are moving accounts/credit that he exhalts explaining to all a sundry , someone has to pay., probably the small customer who is paying interest.

Suitable remote application of TDR based insruments/techniques should provide enough data to warrant a physical inspection for suspect meter bypass. How are 'those in the know' going to overcome that?

No they are not. No one is entitled to make massive profits when a country is in dire need. Why is a company any more entitled to make "healthy profits" than a person working hard for minimum wage entitled to be able to heat their home?

The government will have to step in but they will do it in a way that funnels massive profits to their mates in the private sector and add the bill to the public purse.
