Energy Prices (Strictly NO referrals!)

Guess it depends on how you pay your bill
If it DD then yes it's sort of the same if you get the DD reduced or the help money goes directly to bank account.
But for people who don't pay by DD and just pay each month then it's up to them to keep paying their energy bills and not use the £67 for something different which when say they are on a low income or generally blow their money on drink, drugs and sexy girls won't always be the case.

Yes. In this case I'm just talking about DD.

If you pay in recept of bill or are on pre pay, it should go into your energy rather than bank account.

But if you're on them, it kind of has to?

Help me work out my boiler usage for heating.

I have the 32CDi Compact in the above, it's a 32KW boiler. Does it use 32KW to create 24KW of heating power?

So it seems the debacle of my refunds has come to an end. In doing so, I spotted several admin errors on my account which led to strange discrepancies in my balance and some mysterious fixes by the IT team before I realised the error of their ways. Let's just say EDF's current method of showing payments and balance is completely inadequate and this problem could have been spotted and fixed sooner - not nearly a year later!

I've paid back what EDF refunded me. I took my usage, subtracted the credit I am now in from that, then divided that by 12 to get my new direct debit amount. I had the usual, these payments won't cover your usage - at which point I gleefully asked them to look at my balance and that all is indeed well with my calculations.

Now just the small matter of getting my IHD to see my gas meter. EDF complaints team have told me that it will probably never happen, unless some firmware in the future fixes the problem. Well that's really useful - not. Why can't they send an engineer out to have another go, now the meters and IHD are now commissioned?

It uses up to 32kW for hot water and up to 24kW for central heating. I'd say the min ratings are for modulation if you have opentherm or weather compensation type controls or just turn the dials down?

Doh, yeah, just realised it modulates, so power won't be linear.
No outside temp/weather controls. Just have the dial sat at 60c currently.

Yeah so with the outside temp sensor it will adjust the central heating temps based on temperature delta to let the boiler run more efficiently.

People talking about these 3 hour enforced power cuts... how likely are these going to be then? Media scaremongering?
I'm not sure they will happen, but it's a possibility. As long as they give people enough notice to prepare for a scheduled cut, then I don't see the problem. People will need time to charge things up, fill flasks up and turn off the electric to avoid damage to anything electrical.

There should be a national campaign for reduced energy usage. A concerted effort from the whole country of most people dropping their thermostats by 1C would likely cause a noticeably reduced gas consumption for example. (But let's not forget domestic energy usage only counts for about 20% of national consumption, the rest is business and industry).

I am not following this thread very closely, so apologies if this has already been mentioned.

You can demand a refund of your over paid funds into your energy account should you so wish, and the energy company is obliged to refund the money in a timely manner. I don't know about anyone else, but I wouldn't contemplate an energy company holding over paid funds, and benefiting from its interest.

there was going to be but then government stepped in as they decided it would cost too much money. (£16 mil iirc which is a drop in the bucket really if it makes people save energy).

imo government are playing an odds game, and hoping that do nothing it will all pan out and they can say "see we told you there would be no cuts".

but equally they will have plan B in the bank and say "it would all have been fine but for the green crap and us not frakking" IF there do end up being black outs

if you take a totally cynical view that government just wants to cover their back and dont actually give a crap if there are power cuts for the vulnerable....... it is probably a successful plan of dodging the blame.

In reality I DONT think there will be power cuts, but that does not mean that it would not be a good idea to have a campaign to show people who are wasting a lot of energy how they can perhaps cut back without it hurting them too much.

I heard that it wasn't the 'government', it was just Liz Truss blocking plans from Rees Mogg, which sounds about typical for her.

I'm on v18 - and yes looking at the bill they have applied a % discount against the v18 tariff - however that means I save 1p on both standing charges then pay the correct amount for gas and 2p over for electric so def need to get on the SVR.

Apologies I thought it was v19... They changed so quickly it's hard to keep up (i got v17 only a couple.of months or so ago)

I'm assuming you've had a bill already to see your new rates... I do a meter reading on the 1st of each month so I'll find out what I'm being charged come Nov 1st for Oct.

V17 is higher than current SVR however the 17p/4p that is meant to be applied will bring me just under the SVR so I should be on SVR rates... If not, I'll just phone them to change down and have them credit the account the overcharged amount.

Min ratings are for the modulation built into the boiler to maintain a flow temperature. OpenTherm and weather comp modulate the flow temperature set point - the boiler always modulates its flame size to try and maintain flow temperature by not cycling.

Issue is, in a modern house you'll be taking barely 1-3kW out of the system when the room is up to temp, so the boiler will burn on the minimum flame it can (7kW in this case), but that's too much for the system, so it starts cycling on and off. This is bad for the boiler. It's an issue that's actually exacerbated by OpenTherm - as it requests a lower flow temperature, it gets even harder for the boiler to maintain that flow temperature with a constant flame, and so cycles even more. This also kills efficiency - most 98% rated boilers likely never exceed 70% efficiency, if not lower.

The "trifecta" is a flow temperature that maintains a room/house at a constant temperature, maintained by a constant flame in the boiler. Sadly, most homes seem to have large boilers installed to deal with hot water demand (in the case of combi boilers), which then have an inability to modulate low enough to function efficiently on the heating side. I have a 35kW boiler that can't modulate below 7kW for heating, in a modern, well-insulated house which means it will almost always be cycling once the system gets up to the requested flow temperature. I've not got OpenTherm control yet, but not sure it'll serve me well considering the boiler is just too big.

I seen a BBC article about how france is encouraing lower power use, I like them setting a target temp for homes, and the other measures, I feel we have missed a chance to educate people on energy for silly ideological reasons.

On the £66 rebate my opinion is it should work like this, to stop people spending it on other things but also to allow people with up to date paid balance to get the cash.

If there is an outstanding balance, the £66 is credited and DD "not" adjusted.
If you on variable DD, reduce the DD by £66, and if the DD is less than £66 refund the rest or apply as credit for next bill.
If you on fixed DD but dont have outstanding balance, do same as for variable DD, reduce the DD, and refund the rest if bill lower than £66.

Octopus i think are reducing everyone's DD by £66 regardless if they have an outstanding balance or not. This method is more akin to a generic cost of living payment rather than energy bill help., as 413x said reducing the DD is the same as sticking it in the bank account.

They are. I put my DD back up to its previous level despite being in credit. I may well have a large credit by the spring, but that's fine. I just need to get a good idea on how much gas/energy we use in this new house over winter.

I had a bill a few days ago which shows a portion on the old SVR then I moved to v18 from the 1st - so there are two sets of tariffs, then the VAT added and the £66 removed and the 17/4p discount so all a bit of a mess - their call centre must be having a nightmare explaining this..
