Energy Prices (Strictly NO referrals!)

So in Scotland you don’t have a water meter and you just pay a flat rate in your council tax. Surely I could hook up a water wheel to one of my taps and a turbine and hey presto, free electricity?
Spec me what I need friends!

Not that you were serious but if someone actually decided to do this they'll catch them pretty quickly, they still measure water usage per street and will figure out what's going on :p

I’ve thought this through HACO. I’m going to hack into the water main and divert the water from my waterwheel back into the mains water. Thus not actually using any water. Foolproof wouldn’t you say?
Perpetual, limitless energy. Done.

You could put a little turbine in your incoming feed, and generate a few watts every time you flush :D

any national data showing the impact of yesterdays octopus/eon energy reduction challenge

Hearing a radio 4 article on landlords complaining about tenants ignorantly not providing sufficient ventilation for properties (trying to save energy) and then having damp problems,

that was my first thought for the possible cause of the Sudanese boy whose death the coroner yesterday attributed to mold.

The coroner did not seem to discuss whether similar problems were encountered in the other adjacent identical properties, personally, neighbours never seem to have windows open in kitchens when cooking - what the hell.

Moisture sticks to cold surfaces so maybe the landlords should fix walls being so cold even with the heating on instead of expecting tenants to keep the house warm with windows open.

Clearly they’d rather not do anything to their properties for profit even if tenants suffer.

Odd had my lowest elec usage since my smart meter was fitted 4 or so months ago

Didn't really do anything differently yesterday

I deffo seem to be averaging 5-10% less since meter was fitted

Many meters have the wrong rates pal. Many people complain about them but energy companies dont seem to be able to fix them. Best to use a phone app linked to your main meter. My In home display for example shows the rates from March 2022 - there have been 2 price increases since then. I have made several complaints by phone and email to bulb, they say it will be fixed in 48 hours but it never is. I understand there are similar problems with other energy companies' IHD devices.

Treat the IHD as a guide rather than a reliable instrument because the phone app is much more accurate in real time

LL's can improve their damp issues by reducing their tenant's rent so they can afford to use more heating and improving insulation in their properties.

People have extractor fans you know?

If you watched the BBC report this morning they showed neighbouring properties on that estate all with mould issues and not just a little bit. These issues are not down to opening a windows when cooking (seriously?) these are systemic issues with the housing stock.

Mine has done similar. I don't think it's counting my gas usage any more. I've pretty much learnt to ignore it..

I dont use the IHD and I said units not cost so rates are irrelevant, source is website

Exactly this, it is isn't the tenants causing it. The housing stock is not looked after by the companies like this and do minimal maintenance and they are all well below par.

My mate whom was my housemate moved out after 5yrs here and upon moving into a property run by a large housing company whom did a full 'inspection and update' (wont mention here for reasons) have provided an ex American military bungalow where
  1. the running water is broken in the bathroom so only way to fill a bath is to use shower head slowly or bucket it from the kitchen
  2. most of the sockets are American standard wiring and have just be switched off rather than replaced with UK plugs meaning there is at most 1 socket per room!
  3. the internet cable been ripped out meaning the Sky engineer had to re-cable the whole bungalow from the incoming cable junction box
  4. the door between the kitchen and living room just missing
  5. Painted badly the original 70's kitchen with a very thin coat of white and left paint streaks on all the brown facing frame behind the kitchen doors where they just painted them attached to the cupboards and didn't tape anything
  6. Hadn't provided plumbing for a washing machine that wouldn't back flow and flood the kitchen when in use
And they are charging £1200 + bills for that!! It is a good size and new carpets and excellent garden space being a 70s bungalow but what a mess that is for all the broken and not working things. I would be so deflated if that was what I had turned up too paying that!

We had some mould issues in our old flat and you couldn't do anything about it because it was due to water coming through from the outside. What we did do however was get a spray to treat the mould so it wasn't just sitting there.

Sometimes it can be an issue with the building like yours. Usually it’s due to people not ventilating or allowing the humidity to remain high. I’ve had it in a previous place where the previous people had not ventilated it properly. It took months to get rid of it. Had to run dehumidifiers and bleach the walls every few days. This was after we had removed all the paint, treated and repainted it. It gets engrained into the wall and can take a long time to get out once it’s in.
