Energy Suppliers

Just got a new gas connection installed but Octopus has cancelled the gas meter installation due to covid. Now they are asking me to find out what type of meter I need to be installed and they can do it as an emergency job when I sent that information over.

Does anyone know what meter I need? Surely they have a meter team who know which a domestic property gas meter is required

At our new home the electricity bill is £192 per month. House is all electric built in 1990, efficiency rating of C. We just use loads of juice.

We’re in a 4 bedroom Victorian house, 2 of us working from home permanently and a fairly large dehumidifier running 24/7 in the basement and our electricity bill for December was £49 - do you have a weed farm in there!?!

Electric heating. Work out how much gas you use in KWh and add a big chunk (not all, boilers have losses of course) of that to your electric, it will soon open your eyes!

I’m also with Green Network Energy and my DD is due in a couple of days. Not sure if I should cancel it or not.
I think the advice is not to cancel but check Martin Lewis’ site.

Your balances are protected either way.

Your gas installer (boiler man) will be able to tell you what size meter you need, most likely an 6lt/h standard U6 (also known as a E6 or G4) that's the usual size for a domestic residence upto 4 bed with a standard configuration (one boiler one cooker one fireplace).

Thank you for that, I have sent the information off. Said I need a standard U6 gas meter, hopefully that is all the information they need.

@BigBoy Just on the off chance seeing as though you seem to know about meters, they are also asking me to get out an electrician to find out what electric meter (swapping pre payment meter for credit) I need because my house is 3 phase or something? doesn't make sense to me and same again they should know this. Any idea

Attach a picture of your electric meter and the supply head I can tell you what's what :D:eek:

I've just re-read your post, the supplier must be stupid, there is no 3 phase pre-payment meter they have never been created! You potentially have a 3phase supply head it's common, but most meter engineers can work on that installation type.

There's 2 big storage heaters which we've had running over winter, we will change to something more efficient at some point.

Electric immersion heater, and electric shower which gets used several times daily. The missus and step son also run a wall mounted fan heater when in the bath/shower and they both spend ages in there.

2 tropical fish tanks and all the peripherals for those.

Electric cooker which is used daily at the moment, plus microwave, kettle etc.

When we bought the house I fitted led lights in every light fitting, even the cooker hood, fishtanks and fridge lights are led!

As I mentioned, we just use loads of juice!

Yeah that's your single phase meter it's pre-payment 5 terminal with off peak probably programmed to SSC151 or 244 (7 hrs off peak cheap rate between midnight and 7 am) your supplier should know what it's programmed as. The far left cable, what's it fed from?

@BigBoy

Bought the property and didn't realise the meters where going to be such a problem. As far as I knew I only have 1 meter but energy supplier are saying I have 2 and have been paying 2 standing charges, they won't swap out due to covid or lack of engineers and now because they don't have 3 phase smart meters. I have told them I do not have storage heaters anymore and just want rid of the prepayment meter as it is around £40-50 a week!!

They are asking me to find out which meter I need in order to replace the prepayment - I'm with Octopus Energy and this has been going on for 4 months and i've had to go to the ombudsman but I don't understand my setup. Picture of outside meter and what I presume inside which makes a huge clunk several times a night!

@Nugsy88

You have a single phase installation, what you do have is a two rate meter, not two meters as such but they most likely were some time ago. The black box that goes clunk is a radio teleswitch and turns on any off peak circuits that are connected to it.

The far right cable on the teleswitch where does it go?

@BigBoy

It goes to a small black box with the cable label saying 'storage' guessing it's for the non existent storage heaters and the black box actually has a label saying CLICK so no wonder I'm hearing a big click!

So what should I tell the energy company about what meter is required

So the cable stops at the small black box?

As you are having Gas installed you want a single rate single phase credit meter, and you need a sparky to make sure the of peak is not connected to anything. (Although from what you said and if the answer to the above is yes then it's already disconnected).

Single phase single rate credit meter! You need the pre-payment with off peak meter removed.

Give them that exact line and there "should" be no more issues.

@BigBoy

Yes the far right cable stops at a small black box. I've attached some images! it's like a snakes wedding. Can't thank you enough for the help

No problem.
That's the off peak live isolated so it's already disconnected. Only issue is the neutral feed is not disconnected from the second fuse panel as it should be. Not really an issue as long as the second fuse board is not in use.

Non of this changes anything the installer can sort all this out, it's the best part of an hour and a half's work to get sorted (well it would be for me ;)).

When the guy comes to change the meter make sure you show him/her the entire installation, it's very important they know how it's set up.
