England Euro 2012 post mortem thread.

Is it not poor management asking a striker to mark a midfielder? I'm not saying Woy's alone is asking Rooney to do it because Fergie's got him 'to do a job' countless times before as well but surely the most obvious thing to do would be play someone like Jones to man mark someone like Pirlo and leave Rooney to play his natural game no?

+1!!

That's what I was saying. In my view Rooney shouldn't have been on the pitch since he wasn't fit and certainly wasn't in form. We should have played a three man centre midfield with one player being told to stick to Pirlo like glue. We didn't and it cost us.

Like Messi and Ronaldo? na thought so. dont see either of those players marking a playmaker.

A fit Rooney is certainly not the same class as Messi and Ronaldo. An unfit Rooney doesn't even deserve to be on the same pitch as them. You can't make excuses for him, he should not have been there at all.

Sounds like we wanted the benefit of 451/433, but didn't want to give up 442. If that's the case then we really are a special bunch, comprimise the actual formation we're playing without getting the advantages that we're looking for. Genius.

It seemed to be Welbeck who was mostly closing down Pirlo initially but then he went off. I think the problem is we played 4-4-2 against a team that were playing 4 central midfielders.

Was what I was about to say, I cant see any manager in the world giving them a man marking job. It goes without saying England should have played a 3 man midfield but thinking about it giving Gerrard the job to mark Pirlo would have been the best option given he's got the quality (or used to) to actually create something that far up the pitch as well (should he be able to nick the ball from Pirlo early enough)

-----Jones-----Parker-----
---------Gerrard----------
Milner----Rooney----Welbeck

Something like that would have worked much better

Initially I thought that too, but it didn't make sense and I think it was more a case of Wellbeck seeing Rooney not doing his job and trying to help out. Wellbeck was the furthest forward and Rooney was playing in the gap where Pirlo was operating.

Well there are rumours that Wilshere failed a drug test or was on drugs and therefore that is the real reason why Wilshere diddnt play at all this season and got dealt with internaly by arsenal before going through the FA.

His twitter account has been suspended ever since the rumour surfaced.

And of course is total rubbish, hence why the police are involved with the person who was abusing him on Twitter. He was injured plan and simiple.

pirlo generally plays close to his own half when he starts the move so jones would be to far forward, think the idea with rooney was to keep him quiet before he could have the influence on the game from deep.

as for "blasting" penalties, shearer always says to hit them with power then even if the keeper gets a hand to them you have a chance.

but either way if your off target it doesnt matter how hard you hit em :).

I dont understand why Ashley Cole always shoots to the goal keepers left in penalties? This has become far too predictable and i even mentioned to my mates that he would go there before he took the penalty.

Im pretty sure that Ashley Cole has taken a penalty too the GK left ever since the 2008 Champions League Final against Man Utd

It's depressing. Your forwards can be as good as you like but unless your midfield can get them service you're screwed.

Asking Rooney to mark Pirlo was a bad choice for me, I think one statistic was that by half time he'd run over 20% more distance than the next closest England player. I'd also have taken Young off before Welbeck as with Welbeck on at least we had an outlet. In the 30 minutes that Carroll was on our possession went from c40% for the match to c30%. To be honest the italians just stopped marking him from goal kicks because they knew the knock ons would come directly to them. That's not entirely his fault though, it was a tactical thing as much as anything we didn't play to his strengths. It did mean however that for the last half hour we were pinned back an increasing amount.
