England Euro 2012 post mortem thread.

That said he didn't look fully fit. Rooney is never one of the first players to run out of steam.

And whose fault is that? It's not like he cannot keep himself match fit with the aid of training both at united and with England. Lack of sharpness you could forgive but physical fitness.

He should have been still been fit enough and able to use the excuse of having a rest. Why are managers always crying out for a break in the season if their players will return looking like rooney has.

How long did Tevez have away? It's a poor excuse for lack of form, touch and fitness. Although he wasn't the worse by a long shot.:)

It will be interesting to see what Hodgson does with the squad for the World Cup qualifiers. i do remember him saying he was sticking with the players that qualified us for the Euros in the Euros. I'm not saying bin of the old guard completely, but perhaps look at blooding some younger talent alongside some of the more experienced players.

Whether injuries adds fuel to this - we just seem to lack enough players to put together a decent 'Squad' - last night, for instance, Jordan Henderson coming on.... there has to be another, better midfielder we can call on that can sit in front of the back 4. Again, although only against Greece, the Germans changed their entire front line and still did the business. if we did that we'd be playing the likes of Downing, Carroll, Defoe and Ox - just doesn't cut it i'm afraid.

i agree with the calls for a formation change. 4-4-3 or 4-5-1 has to be the way forward.

Also, we need to pick players on form rather than reputations. Rooney was absent for the majority of both games he plays, don't get me wrong, he's a cracking player that can make things out of nothing, but, it was obvious he wasn't going to do that.

just my 2p worth!

henderson was there due to injuries and players thinking there to good to be on standby, part of which i think is down to clubs being more important than country :(.

I don't know really. I was expecting a lack of sharpness but not fitness.

I'm not making excuses for him, and I'm not saying he was great, he wasn't, but it's a team effort, he will never take apart a well organised team all by himself without support from the midfield.

People are just using him as a scapegoat while ignoring the fact that the entire team were a mess tactically and we were never going to beat a top side.

We basically did what Chelsea did in the Champions League, except they had the luck on penalties and we didn't. The whole approach needs to change.

Who do you think is England's best player then? Just curious...

Our only world class player is Joe Hart in my opinion.

Outfield, probably on recent performances I'd go with Ashley Cole as our best player, and you have no idea how much I dislike saying that.

Lescott had a great tournament too, I reckon.

I don't follow football that closely but why was Young not taken off instead of Milner.. he has been great for United no doubt but the guy was clearly not having a good evening and seemed to get even worse after that collision early in the match his penalty was just a reflection on the rest of his game!

He hasn't been great for United at all. Far far from it. Like I said what the nation has seen from him this tournament is what the United supporters see every week

Not often ill agree with him but Paul Mersons analysis on SSN is bang on for a change.

Your taking the ****, surely

"The guy is 33-years-old and can't run! He was let go for nothing by AC Milan last year as he's past it!

If Italy play Spain in the final then, believe me, Pirlo won't touch the ball more than 10 times and he'll get taken off before the end of the game. But he was running the show against us - and you only have to look at his penalty to see how confident he was."

And

"The best tacticians I ever played under were George Graham and Harry Redknapp. Those two were head and shoulders above Arsene Wenger and people like that."

don't understand what your question about this is, italy had the possession to allow him to do near enough what he wanted, not likely to get anywhere near as much possession against spain, and germany won't allow him the time or space to do as much as he did against us.

i'll admit mers' did start to lose me when he mentioned 'Arry and tactician in the same sentence tho  :D

I do agree with Merson in that piece that footballing ability is getting coached out of our young players at some point. Our players never mature in anything like their potential. Rooney is just playing in a far better team, I don't think he's anything like the player he should be.

When is this getting coached out of players? I watch a lot of u13's as my nephew plays at a decent level and even with 'dad' coaching the kids never ever bang the ball. They play it about with confidence, take on and beat players. Even though the keepers are 4ft tall you never see them bang long balls. Even the worst teams i've seen this year at U13 level have always tried to keep ball and build from the back. It seems to be a natural thing because the keepers can't boot the ball far anyway :D

So why are our clubs getting hold of players and as Merson alludes to coaching it out of them?

We also tend to coach the talent out of kids. I remember the first time I played against a young Joe Cole at West Ham, I couldn't catch my breath. He did something against me and I laughed because he was so good.

But look at him now. When he gets the ball he lays it off. If you look at the FA coaching manual, we'll never produce another Joe Cole. I'm not sure if we have any young players coming through and if we do, the talent is getting coached out of them.

I also agree with him regards Milner. He became highly valued because of his contribution at Villa in the center. So he pretty much always plays on the right for england as a winger. Completely pointless, at least give him a try in the middle for a few games before totally destroying his confidence.

I haven't read it, so can't agree or disagree, but just consider Merson had probably been on the pop when he wrote it which can explain some of the things he comes out with.

I would have to say some of the problem lies within the grass roots coaching in England. The system is built up in a way which fails to nurture natural talented players who have bags of skill, arrogance and class. All that gets coached out of them from an early age so they end up playing in inadequate systems and all the average players with "heart" and "graft" get through. Also they adopt the wrong training technique that is supposed to teach the core basics (control, first touch, passing, awareness, pass and move, positional play).

I dont believe Tevez started immediately for a few games - although I will happily accept if this impression is wrong

Rooney looked much more energized against Ukraine than against Italy imo, last nigh he looked totally out of puff well before the end of the original 90

Maybe a Man City fan can advise where he has played more over the last season, on the wing or more centrally - as iI would guess its rare for a national coach to play a mature player in a different position than he plays week in /week out.

Given the time frame involved, Roy couldnt really do much testing of players maybe this is an option in upcoming friendlies or early qualifiers (obviously there are some players who can use both feet equally well, so they are swapped sides but in a similar position (ie RFB to LFB - or wing /wide players) but from wing to central is relatively unusual)
