FFS Ward-Prowse over Maddison? Seriously? Maddison with greater goal per game (and more goals in fewer games), more blocked shots in defence, better discplinary record, and the ability to score with either foot. Leicester's season tanked when he couldn't play. They'd probably have got CL if he'd not been benched that West Ham game for discplinary. The only thing Southgate can throw at him is that party in lockdown.

The tournament starts in 2 weeks and Maddison has played like he's never seen a football since he returned from injury. In a team with a number of playmakers and given recent injury troubles, it's no surprise he has been omitted. Ward-Prowse is a solid player, rarely misses a game, offers some versatility and can do a defensive job in an area of the pitch where at least three of the options have/have had recent injury concerns. It's not really comparing eggs with eggs.

DCL and/or Watkins over Bamford and/or Ings? Not for me.
Serious dearth of keepers for Ramsdale to make the cut.

I like Ward-Prowse, one of the few technical players we have who is composed on the ball. Southgate will be hoping set piece goals carry him again and he's the best dead ball specialist we have.

Good news for Liverpool and I'll be happy if he's not going but he's our most talented fullback by an absolute mile.

Yes he's not the greatest defensively but neither were Alves or Cafu and they're widely regarded as the best right backs ever.

tbf with Southgate at the helm it wouldn't matter if he goes or not, he won't get played even where all the stats indicate he has the better skill set for that opposition and when the other (preferred) option is burnt out and not producing the goods. Just look at the insistence on playing Kane in the latter matches of the last world cup even when he'd gone AWOL like he inevitably seems to do when it gets to crunch time.

Am I the only one looking at our group and thinking we'll be lucky to finish 2nd? Croatia nobbled us last world cup and Czech Republic are no pushover either. Scotland could rise to the occasion and do a plucky underdog routine a la Iceland although that one we ought really to win. But then we said the same about the Iceland game.

If we play a back 5 then Southgate is again an idiot.

Assists (RBs)

Trent Alexander Arnold: 7
Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 4
Reece James: 2
Kyle Walker: 1

This is a poor season assist wise for Trent and he still has the same as all of the others put together. More PL assists then Walker in his career.

Southgate doesn't give a toss about assists from fullbacks, it's all about being defensively sound and fairly boring with him. He thinks he can win a competition being pragmatic but you need to take risks if you don't have the best squad.

I'm probably going to switch the games off if he sets up how I think he will as it will be your standard 90 minute England performance trying to scrape a 1-0.

If you play 5 at the back you want a fella on the right who can actually pass though. Going off rumours Greenwood isnt going either but thats due to injury apparently.

Yup, Greenwood is out which is a shame for him, but maybe it'll help Southgate a little bit.

Trent not going would be a shambles, yes he's not as good defensively but we should have enough quality to not struggle against some of the teams there! We need him playing balls to Kane :(

He is more then good enough defensively tho...i really dont get where that opinion comes from tbh. His stats have him right up there and thats with absolute shambles Liverpool have had a cb this season.

Trippier has had 6 assists this season, another good option for RB.

I suspect it’s between James and Trippier for the right back slot which is why Gareth thinks Trent is surplus to requirements. I have no doubts Trent should go, but if he doesn’t I hope he has a nice long holiday and comes back fit and raring to go next season.

This Greenwood injury is a bit weird in that apparently it's an existing injury going back months but he's still been playing with it - he played in literally every MU league game between New Year's Day and the last game of the season. Probably a blessing in disguise as I didn't think he should make the cut and he also has the Iceland affair hanging over him.

Still can't believe we can seriously leave TAA out but I suppose with that many RBs at least one has to be left behind, and the other three all won the toughest European competitions (EPL, La Liga, CL) whereas he won FA. You'd have thought his versatility would work in his favour however.
