He is more then good enough defensively tho...i really dont get where that opinion comes from tbh. His stats have him right up there and thats with absolute shambles Liverpool have had a cb this season.

I get that, and I'd rather have him being the first choice, but I don't think you can deny he is probably the worst defensively (not saying he's a bad defender, btw) which I imagine that's Gareth's only focus :(

He has the highest tackle success rate out of the 4 there. He isn't as bad as people make him out to be defensively and like ive said, his role in a back 5 would be to attack down that side. Not taking a player of his ability over someone like James is just stupid to be honest.

Trent is number one in the whole league for the following :

Passes into the penalty box

Crosses into the penalty box

Progressive passes

Progressive passing distance

He's 6th in key passes, 5th for expected assists and 6th for through balls.

None of that matters to Southgate.

In terms of defensive stats, he has the lowest tackle success per 90 mins, the lowest tackles won in the defensive 1/3, the lowest number of blocks and the most errors leading to a goal.

Our fullbacks are the focal points of our attacks at Liverpool and have the freedom of the pitch, for England they're there to defend and probably won't be allowed out of their own half.

Let us also not forget how poor Liverpool's normally dependant strikers have been at putting their chances away this season. Trent has still been supplying the crosses.

Infogol stats are saying he has the best success rate of the four at 74%?

He's lowest in tackle success, no?

Going off the PL stats, Walker is 66%, James is 64% and Trent is 59%.

The issue I'm trying to highlight, is Southgate is a manager who doesn't seem to give a flying **** about what a player can do going forward so it's not a surprise that he's the one missing out.

Is it wrong? Personally yes. We have an exciting team of attacking talent, unfortunately we have a manager who won't utilise it.

Really we are discussing assists for a defender because TAA gets more than the other RB's. Leighton Baines used to get more than Ashley Cole. You can quote all the stats you want for tackles made or assists but that doesn't tell you how many times he been poorly positioned or made bad judgement calls. You can make 160 tackles in a match but can then make 2 bad errors that led to goals.

For whatever reason Southgate and his team aren't interested in setting up a side worrying about TTA assists, especially the creative players we now have in the middle. Or something has gone on behind the scenes we don't know about.

Statistics, again look at these from 2013 for Baines vs Cole.

Baines blocked more shots
Won more tackles
Created 116 chances compares to coles 17

But like everything else in this thread I've cherry picked the stats that suit because only a mad man would consider Baines in the same class as Cole.

We are discussing assists as its likely he will play 3 at the back. Its a relevant stat.

I don't think he will, not against most teams anyway. He went back to 4-3-3 last international break, and the 3 atb formation was used in mostly pointless friendlies. I don't even think Gary can look past how awful 3atb was. It'll be an option, but not his main one imo.

It all hinges on maguire surely. If he's not fit then two central defenders stay instead as Southgate wonders who to use, Coady or Mings or one of the uncapped duo. With Maguire good to go he can drop a CD and still fit in Trent, Trippier, James.

Just seen about Lingard. FFS he's been on fire recently. We'd have CL football if he'd not been part of that West Ham team.

I can't help but feel the best way to win a tournament is attack attack attack. Defend defend defend only works if you can go ahead and then close shop, and we're just not good enough to hold out for long enough, all tournament. When your best options are in the front half, play to your strengths surely?

A strong defence is needed but when the opposition is as good as it will be after the group stage you can’t rely on nicking a goal and then shutting up shop, you’ll get your shop ram raided.

Hmm England 14/1 to NOT make it out of the group stage. Interesting.

It’s clear to just about everyone, Trent is the standout RB available to England. If he doesn’t go it will be a travesty that just confirms Southgate doesn’t know his arse from his elbow. That 14/1 to not get out of the group looks tempting.

Put it this way, you’re 1-0 down, 70th minute and Trent is an option on the bench. Of course you bring him on, even if it means shuffling to three at the back, tell him to forget about defending and get his arse up that right side and get some crosses in.it’s a no-brainier.
