He is more then good enough defensively tho...i really dont get where that opinion comes from tbh.

There have been a number of disparaging comments about his defensive ability this season, and that's from Liverpool fans on this forum. e.g. this one: "Trent might as well stand on the halfway line for all the use he does at the back, never seen a fullback beaten 100% of the time."

He would be in my squad and in my XI, but this selection is talked about too much really.

Southgate's getting sacked after the Euros. He's gambling on the fitness of Maguire, who might not be fit for our first game, which suggests he'll play some games with a 3 at the back and some with 4.

Most competent managers would've already decided what system they'll play by now and it's not as if he couldn't pick players for that system rather than chop and change midway through.

Blokes a fraud that's never accomplished anything in management and has yet again gone against the 'I'll never pick players on reputation, only form' BS he spouted when he started his period of misery.

Sack Southgate, cancel International football, give Liverpool players the summer off

OK let's try and pick some holes in these decisions:

Goalkeepers: In goal we've got a choice between Henderson (12.5 league games for his club this season), Johnstone (let in 74 goals in a relegated team) and Pickford (...)
Defence: Only two CBs from teams in the top half of the table, one of whom is an injury doubt and when fit would be evens at best in a foot race with Teddy Sheringham, and the other is such a liability at times that he can't even pull the wool over Paul Merson's eyes. Looking past them two, will the likes of Mbappe and Ronaldo be crying themselves to sleep the night before knockout games against defenders from teams in the bottom half who finished with e.g. a GD of -16? I doubt it somehow.
Midfield: Only one midfielder with over 16 caps, and he's injured.
Forwards: Nullify Kane and England look toothless, no other player has 15 international goals, and the two that have scored 5+ (Sterling and Rashford) haven't exactly ripped up many trees this season.

In all seriousness, I look at the keeper and CBs and think **** me, this is the 11th Euros in my lifetime and I can't think of many less confidence-inspiring triangles as the lynchpin of our team.

Personally I would've taken JWP instead of Rashford, but the FA will have told Southgate in no uncertain terms that MR must be in the squad as his wholesome image must be a sponsors dream.

I mean toothless if you ignore the fact there's also three of the most exciting wingers we've seen in a long time, and Mount who's had an incredible year going, sure. Not to mention Maguire is a lot better than you're making out and Stones has been a crucial part of one of Europe's best defences this year.

I'm also not entirely sure who else you even could pick in those positions, Timori maybe? Burnely's CBs who have also shipped 55 goals this season (more than Wolves)? My main issue with the squad is the lack of midfield depth, and also what that signals formation wise.

You have to wonder how much of that goes on. Is the manager making the decisions or is the FA, sponsors, etc.

I wouldn't bet against Southgate being told that he has to take certain players.
