England vs The Netherlands & other International Friendlies ** spoilers ** [29th Feb 2012]

None of the current England squad have really done much good on the international stage.

If we can get Rooney playing well for England, he would be our best chance of getting anywhere.

Rooney is one of the 'old guard'?

He is to me, it's laughable that his best game was his first. When he was actually full of hunger on the international scene before the rest of the big time charlies dragged him down to their level.

He's a great great player but not at international level. They all know it's a step down and the difference in desire when they play for club and country is easy for all to see.

Where as the fans see it differently. We would want to play every game for England, rather than crying off games and playing on saturday. Getting the most goals ever for England should have been a great target and one he should have gotten easily. Yet like most of them he can't be arsed to turn out for friendlies.

You will never get the best out of any of players when they can't be bothered to play regularly with each other. You can't create a decent unit and system swapping out 3 or 4 players each game on rotation, finding the best 11 from all those games and hoping it gels at the finals. Not with the talent we have available anyway :(

Rooney cannot be trusted at international level to be our best bet. Far too risky that he would ever play 5 games in succession. He's far too much of a liability internationally, it can be covered by united but not england.

Does parker make the head lines for any of the following reasons:
Dad is a druggie
Mum is a thief
Hits DJ's in clubs
drink driving
any other bad publicity what so ever?

no

Does Scott parker:
Give his all for 90 minutes?
Is he likely to lead by example?
Does he have the respect of the players around him?

yes.

Other than Hart he was the obvious choice. but to people saying it should be someone else blah blah stevie g blah blah, I think they need to take a moment and actually think. Its not a step backwards. Its a good appointment by a possibly interim manager for a friendly.

Think that's a decent call on the captain tbh, experienced head and a good player in the middle of the park plus as people have said, there's no point at all picking a 'long-term' captain before you have a 'long-term' manager, politically alone it's a minefield.

tbh footballers just use the international game to boost their "image rights" look at Beckham all he wanted to do was beat the most caps, not about if he was good enough for the team, more bother about being seen around the world so he can sell more perfume and underpants

Wembley should be quite a sight tonight with all the colourful Dutch fans. Must be making a move soon.

Hart
Richards Cahill Smalling Baines
Parker Barry Johnson Gerrard Young
Welbeck

That's the apparent line up for tonight that is doing the rounds on twitter and the like.

Going forward for the long term Hart is 100% the right choice. Self Defence Stevie can do one. Don't mind Parker for one night only, but the whole kerfuffle over choosing a captain is ridiculous.

That England lineup is so so dull, hopefully Richards can have a good game but up front is dull. I'm not convinced by Young and Johnson but when the other options are Downing and Walcott are no better.

Assuming it's the Real Madrid 4-2-3-1, it's slightly more interesting:

Hart

Richards Cahill Smalling Baines

Parker Barry

Johnson Gerrard Young

Welbeck

---

Especially when you consider how both Johnson and Young love cutting inside.

Will it work though? Hmm.

Isnt Gerrard playing in a more defensive position these days for Liverpool, or is that just commentator codswallop?

Still probably the best AM we have, but it would be nice to see players who are going to go to the euros playing in their long term positions as well (in a perfect world)

I guess with Wilshire and Cleverly not available tonight it doesnt help

Lets see how much diving Johnson gets upto tonight :D

Gerrard is not the best attacking midfielder in the squad, Lampard is. Anyone who thinks otherwise has a real problem. Also he hasn't played for England since November 2010, definite fitness machine right there.

Not a bad lineup, if true.

Shame though, it'll mean less chance of Fraizer Campbell getting a runout, which I was actually looking forward to.

Why shouldnt Gerrard start? Yes im biased but he is a better player and leader than Lampard for example.

Barry should be dropped from England before any one else!

i like the line up but Cahill and smalling are not good enough imo.

Smalling CAN be good enough but chaill imo is a total loss, masivley overated

Gerrard shouldn't start because he played 120 minutes 3 days ago.

Other than that he is better than frank, Gerrard's 08/09 season in the attacking role ****es all over anything Lampard has done in that position.

Oh and you're right about Barry, usually awful player.
