England: What went wrong? (serious discussion) **SPOILERS**

Any trolling in here and I'll close this as well.

I think we went wrong by the choice of forwards for a start, Bent or Defoe should have gone instead of Walcott, giving us a lot more options.

But the main problem was too many players didn't turn up for the tournament, simple as that.

why not delete the trolls post or suspend them

As much as people rave about JT i think rio has been the best defender for us this tournament. But the both of them are world class and there's not many that come close. Ashley cole played really well again and Arsenal should try their best to hang onto him, and as much as people hate nevile there's no better player at RB for england.

Does that mean Rooney's out for the first 1/2 euro 08 qual games btw?

1. Rooney's sending off. Stupid. No way a red card. Not even a booking.
2. No-one up front with Rooney, we saw in the last match he needed more support.
3. Lampard couldn't score. He was off-form. I like him, but he was off the boil, replace him. No room for liking players in the WC.
4. Lack of strikers. Why take Walcott and not play him even after we'd qualified.

Agreed. Poor tactics and some big name players not playing to their usual high standards didn't help matters much either. I've changed my opinion on Hargreaves, I now see why they rave about him in Germany. If he could do that in the Premiership I would take him at Man Utd. Man of the match today as well, didn't stop running, fought for everything.

The combination of Gerrard and Lampard doesn't work, if Sven was a better manager he would have dropped one of them (Lampard), and played the team in a proper 4-4-2 formation. Lennon has been a good player, he really should have started some matches ahead of Beckham. Defensively England have done very very well and they'll be there in the next WC with the exception of Neville (who will be 35/36).

Bringing Theo Walcott to Germany was a massive mistake and I don't think we'd see other high profile managers making the same error in judgement. It's never nice to go out in penalties but my hats off to the guys who stepped up and took one. The stigma of rarely winning penalty shootouts will continue until proper management instils confidence into the team. In my eyes the match was lost before the penalties. I hope Ronaldo never sets foot at Old Trafford again, the cheating ****. (btw I thought this before the WC).

Rooney was set up to be the fall guy months ago, if he played and didn't score or win England games then the media would have a scapegoat. It's unfortunate that he was sent off, it just makes the media's job easier now. :( It was never a sending off and the referee never looked like booking him until Ronaldo and the other whiners stuck their beak in.

Overall I think the tournament has been quite bad so far, marred by cheaters, divers, bad refereeing, it's not turned out to be the spectacle I thought it was. :(

I'm just hoping Steve can win it for us in the Euro which will certainly give us an indication on weather or not we can win the bigger tournament, World Cup.

We should have used Walcot. We needed to use Lennon a lot more. He has immense pace, stamina and skill. With Hargreaves. He's just the sole person who stood out for me in the English team. Hargreaves should take a more central role in midfield. The defence is great. I like the Terry and Ferdinand partnership. Rooney should learn to control his temper and shut his fat jaw. Gerrard and Lampard need to break through more and actually score some. Beckham needs to stop crossing balls in to people's bloody feet. Robinson played great. He played good. Can't really blame him on penalties. Neville is great. Worthy of being captain. We need to change captain as well. We need someone who can push the England team on the pitch and Neville seems like the man.

Loads more but I just want to hear what people have to say.

Edit: FORMATION. We need to learn to stick to a comfertable formation. And also, change formations quickly.

Agreed a new captain is needed. Not sure if Nev will be around for 2008 though. Maybe Stevie G or John Terry as captain

i think ive come to the conclusion not to expect england to do well...

just do what other nations do and not expect everything all the time... i think when our players are playing with other world class players they dont look so bad.. in fact they look amazing. when they all play together for england though.. they are 20% what they are for their clubs.

maybe we havent got real "world class" players.... we have just got good players.

who knows.. but next world cup ill set my standard now.. ill be happy us just getting to the 2nd round... i want to be like ukraine.. why not :p then ill be happy

If not. Then Neville for the time being until we find someone fit. Beckham is clearly making an uninspiring captaincy. I hope he abdicates his position volunterely.

Same old story for England :(

Lamard and Gerrard never really figured the whole tournament.

Rooney stupid stupid boy but thats who he is and would he be as good if his temprement was different. was rushed back and really wasnt sharp enough.

The loss of Owen was massive, couldnt see us winning without him even tho he wasnt playing well. his presence allows Rooney to play better.

Beckham, well what can you say. showed again today that the consistency has gone from his passing and free kicks.

Joe Cole looked brilliant at times. Surprised at his removal today. Lennon was superb again and is a very exciting prospect.

Hargreaves shut a lot of critics up today and i'll admit i was one of them. played his heart out and showed it when he scored.

Back four were good as usual, probably the last we'll see of Neville at a major touranment, definitly his last World Cup.

This Golden generation of players we currently have may not be seen for a while again and i feel Svens inability to be tactical has cost us many good chances to win a tournament.

Sven was the problem.

4-5-1 had already failed against Ecuador so I don't why we still played it.

Lennon should have started every game, as should have Hargreaves. Should have taken another striker with us. I could go on and on....

Have you actually watched any england games?

England are far from toothless without owen, infact personally i dont rate owen. Not to say he isnt a good player.

Gerrard and lampard are definately world class players. no one can be on 100% form all their lives however :)

thing is with owen, hes usualy in the right place at the right time

and thats what we needed today

We all knew what was wrong, the only one who didn't was Sven. I think he hoped that the players would adapt to his system, when really the system needed to be adapted to the players. You should go to the world cup with everything firing not hope to sort it when you get there.

Squad selections- Taking two injured strikers and an unproven striker to the world cup. I'd say that was shooting yourselves in the foot before the world cup began.

Formations/Positions- Suiting formations to include players (Beckham, Lampard and gerrad)

Media and pundits constantly hyping the team up to win, adding un-necessary pressure and i think led to some players having a poor world cup.

1) sack sven (well he's going)
2) drop beckham from team (useless these days and time for fresh blood)
3) drop sol from any future squad
4) make terry captain
5) DROP LAMPARD
