England: What went wrong? (serious discussion) **SPOILERS**

I blame Lampard. I don't recall him having a good game in this World Cup.
Others haven't performed, like Beckham, and Cole but they had their moments

I don't recall one good shot on target from Lampard, and far too many loose passes, and when he walked up to take that penalty, you just *knew* he would do what he has done all tournement. Make a big mess of it.

Also, isn't the spoiler warning too late ??:

Well with the exception of Lennon and Hargreaves none of the england players really shined, apart from carrick/carragher (the motm against equador i cant remember now) England have no chance :p no one really 'shined'
Joe Cole is easily my best player of the WC for England - with or without his 'wonder' goal hes grown up and playing some damn nice football, with him now having a permanant spot down the left wing how often have critics been complaining about needing a left-sided player there? He now has some end product after his tricks and I guess we have Mourinho to thank for that...

Ive always rated Hargreaves, but Ive seen him play a bit for Bayern Munich, I still dont understand why he got all the criticism other than not that many people seen him play club football...

Less said about Lampard the better - never really thought much of him TBH. He just plays with some very good players for his club which makes him look better when he does something right for a change - same as Beckham...

joe cole is still pants on the left though, hes still has a natural tendancy to cut in, rather than go out wide and cross with the left. it just leaves a lot of space unused.

Hargreaves had a lot of criticism as every match except for the last 2 (or was it 3) he has been absolutely useless.
He has played much better being statred rather than put on with 10 minutes left.
I have respect in him as a player now

Fair point, when he does cut in though, he normal gives a good cross - more than what Beckham provided on the right this WC...

The fact the media still doesnt moan about the problem left is an indication how well hes done in that position. Yes, we would love a decent left-sided winger there, but for now Joe Cole is doing very nicely IMO - this WC proved it...

england should have started with rooney upfront with walcott(why take him if your not going to risk him playing) and lennon down the right with hargreaves and gerrard in the centre. also rooney shouldn't have reacted the way he did but did you see ronaldo headbutt him at the start? ronaldo knew what he was doing and they all knew they could get rooney sent off. also did the ref get a backhander or something because all the decisions seemed to go against us or was i just ******

to be fair i saw cole put a lot of crosses wide. id drop either lampard or gerrard (lampard imo) and play gerrard and cole in the middle and downing on the wing.

But what people are forgetting, with 10 men after a pathetic sending off (he was pulled down, kicked and then pushed which resulted in him stepping on someones nuts - look at his face, he didn't mean it!) they played like the lions on their shirts.

Take on board the heat (closing the lid of the stadium, surely that just makes it hotter inside??), the 10 men and, in my opinion a ref that was unconsistent throughout the game, they all played well.

A few of them didn't play their best, but like what has been said - they cannot perform 100% all of the time - and today seemed to be that day :(

Yes, we are crap at penalties but with of our main penalty takers out of the game it wasn't to be :(

Of all the people to finish England off, it had to be the smug, big headed Ronaldo.

I bet Portugal, amongst others, will have cracking diving teams in the next olympics though - glad to see England joining them on that in the end. If everyone else can do it why can't we.

A very very disapointing day, but the fans did England proud, the players did their best - Sven is Sven, he has been the same since day one, and to be honest (and I would love to be proved wrong on this believe me!) I cannot see McClaren taking England anywhere. Like I said, hope I am proved wrong on that one.

Big round of applause to the players - they deserved to go to the semis, but it wasn't to be :(

Exactly as a team member of Rooney's at Man Utd he knows Rooney get's worked up easily and he played on that when he headbutted him at the start, also when he ran in arms all over the place when Rooney was trying to talk to the ref. By that point he had lost his temper and pushed him out the way to carry on speaking to the ref, he got sent of for something so stupid and did you see Ronaldo's little smirk as he saw Rooney walking off?

Wonder how Ferguson will see it :x.

i think the problem with england, and it wasn't just todays match, was in general a lack of confidence on the pitch, on paper i thought that we had one of the strongest sides in it but i dont think that they played well in any of their world cup matches

and secondly as i think has already been mentioned is that the tactics were completely wrong, we shouldn't play a lone striker as it obviously doesn't work ! should have played a 4-4-2 and have beckham/lennon on the right, lampard and gerrard in the middle and joe cole on the left, and then played rooney and crouch up front, i think crouch did extremely well when he came on and with him playing up rooney could have played his preferred game that little bit deeper as a link man/play maker

i really couldnt say that was true, they had the easiest set of teams to play and never looked convincing all the way through.

1. Rooney's sending off. Stupid. No way a red card. Not even a booking.
2. No-one up front with Rooney, we saw in the last match he needed more support.
3. Lampard couldn't score. He was off-form. I like him, but he was off the boil, replace him. No room for liking players in the WC.
4. Lack of strikers. Why take Walcott and not play him even after we'd qualified.

Spot on. Might I add that I think Sven picks his side the wrong way. He pretty much picks his favourite players and doesn't seem to either realise or care that doing it that way doesn't always add up. 11 great players doesn't always make a great team, in the same way that teams with so called poorer players can overacheive by playing in a system which suits them all.

He had the perfect chance today to show us all he knew what he was doing by bringing Walcott on with 10 min left. I was astonished when it was Carragher who came on.

Today showed why everyone moans when we play poor but still win. Anyone with an ounce of sense knows that you can't just keep scraping through games, eventually you have to produce some quality.

Thats where Ashley Cole should be overlapping into

Every time I saw Ashley Cole running the overlap, Joe Cole cuts in and doesnt use him.

Joe Cole has been Man of the Match for one game. I thought he was average at best today.

Most consistant player for me for England is Owen Hargreaves. He may not be the most gifted, but he certainly gave it everything. Every game he played.

At what point in the tournament did any of our 'big' players come anywhere close to 100%?

We were let down by most of the players.

i think we just go to show that 'galacticos' all put together isnt an instant recipe for success....

the insistance of playing so many 'superstars', even when they do not flow well together(gerrard/lampard), even when they are injured or questionable(rooney, owen), even when they are looking suspect and iffy (beckham) is the reason for the poor performance...

ill take a team which is weaker 'on paper' in certain areas if it means we play well together AS A TEAM. I'll take that any day of the week over slinging the 11 best we have and hoping they all make it work ...

thats all i have to say :)

Can I please ask the people that are having a go at Rooney for being sent off what he did wrong?!?

Its pretty obvious that the 'stamp' was accidental looking at the replays, no intention or anything, moreso he deserved a freekick to be sandwiched and manhandled to the ground. Yes, his reaction and push on Ronaldo deserved the referees attention, but it was blantantly obvious he was goading the ref to get him sent off. Considering they are club team mates and probably friends, I can totally read whats going through Rooneys mind when he saw what Ronaldo was upto. If winning the WC means that much to you then you might be a great player, but an useless human being...

Also do you guys feel sorry for Walcott? Considering all the controversy in Svens decision to take him, if I was a future England manager Id think twice before using him in a competitive match. Hopefully whatever promise he has left he can show at club level way before the next time they are called upon...

EDIT: Svens on ITV, feel like spitting in his face, ruined probably the strongest squad in this WC and best one weve had for probably a decade...
