English, CL & Europa League Football [12th - 18th Mar 2010] **spoilers**

Show me a team thats won a trophy without spending money, it doesn't happen. You make it sound like you paid pittance for Rooney etc.

I dont care if a team spends £1 million or £100 million on a player.

Show me any team that doesn't spend money.

Doesn't happen.

They can still win things though even if they spend little.

Your logic is flawed and doesn't make any sense.

Man Utd spend what they've earned. Big bloody difference there.

Manchester City have owners with oodles of cash and Manchester United don't.

Any fan that says they wouldn't want Citys money are lying.

I wouldn't exactly say the Glazers don't have much cash, compared to most they're positively rolling in it since Malcolm Glazer has a net worth of over $2 billion. Now whether the Glazers choose to spend (much of) their own money on Manchester Utd is another issues entirely but to say the owners don't have oodles of cash is a shade hard to believe.

Why does a fan have to be lying if they say they don't want the cash for their club - looking at the circumstances that surround the investment may well mean that it is simply not a desirable option. It depends what success (and even then it's not guaranteed that you can ultimately buy success) means to you and whether you think the trade-off versus what you will have to give up is worth it. If it were up to me and the offer was short term success with a large sum invested in my club but almost certain decline/bankruptcy afterwards or the usual level of achievement but no real chance of the club going bust then I'll take the second option each and every time.

The only losers today were the spurs/liverpool loving press pack.

The now long forgoten everything went their way 2nd half at chelsea can no longer be used to spout on about how city look nailed on for 4th.

Been a strange experience listen to that being drilled in for the last couple of weeks, having been served up man city on the tv constantly over the last 2 months.

Today city were the pss poor team they were in the subsequent 10 or so halfs before divine intervention struck at the bridge.

Belive me, im a football fan of the highest order.. im one of those guys that gets exicited when a multi million splurge goes in on a team.. i couldn't care who they are.. like chelsea did, i want to see them blitz the league play, the glorious game.. show what it's all about on my tv as much as posible.

The only fall back on todays game would be the pitch i suppose, added to the fact sunderland played the game to suit... and even if they could city couldn't have done much about it. Having said that though.. in the first half the ammount of individual errors were shocking.. creating and moving into space off the ball was the order of the day with a stick to the man like glue defence, clog him one in the back static back line.

In fairness mancini saw that it falling over in midfield.. one less in midfield was the thing to do, with a man with some movement up front.. unfortunately that meant Cruz who's frankly crap, and in truth it could have been easily been taken as just one less guy to give the ball away.

Woes for city i think, ill still be tuning in like a sap though in the belief im gona see something great everytime they show up on tv.

There was an interesting short article in the Guardian the other day about Nasri's little dribble for his goal against Porto, and how generally that just isn't the done thing in the Premiership - a good eye for a pass, a high workrate, and quick movement are all considered more important in a player than his ability to trick with the ball at his feet. And it makes sense too - why risk a chance of going round a player by yourself when you can literally pass him by?

Yet, in the end, dribbling is simply cooler. Which is the world puts Ronaldo or Messi or Ronaldinho on a plateau above the likes of Scholes or Lampard. Perfectly talented footballers, but never ones that will dazzle you with a quick-footed move.

I think ultimately that's why most of the 'exciting' players like that exist in La Liga. Cliched as it is, the space given by defenders makes it all the more possible. Messi would be hacked of the park by Shawcross and his ilk over here.

Shawcross has only been sent off once and has never been banned under the totting up procedure for number of bookings.

He made an awful tackle on Jeffers from behind, He tried to kill Adebayor in an off the field tackle and actually killed another Arsenal player.

I agree with this.

I think teams in this country and more ruthless in their quest for glory if that makes sense, and they scarfice "football" in order to try and gain that. I don't mean they all play bad football (although a lot do), but it's right why develope young players to dribble past a player when you can kick it past them?

Spainish football, and a few other leagues are just more exciting to watch because of the attacking style and skill of the players.

I think it will be sad day when all football teams give up "football" to try and gain success.

Messi get hacked down all the time. Ronaldo has been sent off a couple of times these season for reacting to the amount of fouls on him.
I seem to remember Ronaldo drippling past plenty of players in the PL with many of them falling over just at the sight of him running at them! The main difference between the PL and La Liga is that PL players are more rounded, while latin players are more specialist. In the PL nearly everyone is expected to track back, with Ronaldo probably been the exception, while in LL/Serie A offensive players aren't expected too.

Pele was kicked all the time.

Sometimes, the only way defenders can stop these players is too kick them. It's a great shame, but must be a mixed feelings for the players.

Add a horrendous tackle he made in Belgium while on loan over there. He's got a history of horrible tackles; some have come after being riled up earlier on in the game.
