English League Football [6th - 10th Feb 2010] **spoilers**

I might have been taking the **** ;)

edit: on a serious note; afaik, any foul on the line is a penalty. So whether he's 1mm on the line or completely covering it, shouldn't matter.

The mistake from Webb was not seeing the handball, you could forgive him if he gave either a free-kick or penalty as whether he's inside or outside the box is so marginal.

On the line counts as being inside the box. So if he was standing on the line, as it appears he was, then it's a penalty.

And Jakeke; you can complain about the Hleb penalty not being given (and I'll just point out that Flamini should have been sent off earlier in the game:p) but that was a foul on Babel; Fabregas clearly pulls his arm and Toure jumps on his back.

Yeah but the foul was about 5 yards outside the area, Babel fell down over the space of about 20 footsteps :(

I agree with you there. How on earth did he not see it? :p

Over the last few years, there's been big referee **** ups every weekend, now it seems like there's one every single game. No fans have been happy with any refereeing performance this season. It's turned into an even bigger joke.

Whoever the ref was for the Chelsea vs Arsenal game at the weekend, he had an outstanding performance, got almost everything right

iirc, the player has to be inside the box not on the line. Inside the box. Same rules that apply for the ball being out of play.

So if it was on the line it was a free kick.

Who cares where his feet where? It was handball, his feet have nothing to do with it, or are you trying to suggest someone could handball it with their feet outside the box, and for it to not be a penalty.

For example a keeper's body and feet can be outside the area, but he can still be holding the ball if his hands are in the area.

The back of his foot was barely on the line, his arms/hand were not direct above his feet, they where bent just above his head.

I think Evra had a part in it selling Giggs short with a really bad pass that resulted in the challenge. Massive loss and it couldn't have come at a worse time of the season.

It's not a case of interpretation, it's the rules. A foul on the line is a penalty, even against Liverpool :p

It's where the ball is that counts not where the player is. If a goalkeeper is in the penalty area and reaches outside the area to pick up the ball then it is handball.

Fab would have had to been in the area to concede the pen, he wasn't. It was a free kick.

All of fab had to be in the area, or at least the part the ball hit, the area follows the same rules as a ball out of play, ie that the entire ball has to be in the box (if that makes sense) so a foul on the line is a free kick.

I understand that but there's no line 6ft in the air so where he's standing is the best indication of where the contact was.

Apart from it was his heal on the line, his elbow was in front of his face. Now unless he was leaning backwards there's no way the front of his head would be behind his heals.

Go watch it again and pause it at the point of contact; his arm is above his head not in front of his face.

As I said earlier, whether it was on the line, in or out of the box is incredibly difficult to say so there can't be any huge complaints there. The fact that Webb completely missed the incident is what is hard to understand.

Ashley Cole out for 3 months - big blow for Chelsea and only leaves him a few games to be ready for England too, shame as he was playing very well.

Step up Wayne Bridge for England
