Liverpool fans, what position would you be "content" with this season? Europa League spots?

There isn't a particular position that I would be content or discontent with. It's the way we play and the signings we make that I will be content or discontent with. If Hodgson shows more interest in attacking and more ambition in his signings then I will be content , if as I suspect , he doesn't then I will be discontented and want him out.

The squad is capable of getting close to a CL spot .

Not a chance.

I have nothing against Liverpool but barring Reina (who seems to want to leave) Torres (who seems to want to leave) and Gerrard (who is too dumb to realise it is the best idea going to leave) you have no real players who are capable to get you into the top 4.

You could argue that Carra, Johnson, Kuyt and Mereiles (spl?) are decent enough but I wouldn't be convinced by any arguement.

You have a worse squad than Spurs and Man City. THe only edge you have over the two is that your star players are better, in terms of an overall team I would have Spurs or Man City starting line up over your own any day of the week.

and certainly in the top 6-7

Even that will be a struggle for you Everton amongst others will give you a run for your money.

If you lose Torres and Reina you can give up on top 10. The American bloke will probably already be regretting his investment.

Not a horrendous result for Newcastle today, a point is a point but was really hoping for 3 after a disapointing midweek performance. But as I said, a points a point. Away to Bolton will be hard but so far this season we have specialised in winning the hard games :p

Not a chance.

Didn't more or less the same squad, while playing it's first team in Europe and having major injury problems to key players, challenge for a CL spot last season?

As above, we've not had the injury problems as yet, we're resting our key players in Europe and the likes of Spurs and Villa aren't doing as well. Therefore the squad SHOULD be capable of competing to at least the same level as last season.

The reason we're not is the manager.

You didn't really challenge last season, correct me if im wrong (not being sarcastic, being honest cant really remember this far back) but wern't you trash last season going out early in CL and finishing 7th?

Two years ago you were almost champions and pushed united most of the way but that was when you had Alonso wasn't it? Biggest mistake ever selling him, watch Real whenever I can as I have £50 on them winning CL, Spanish League and Spanish Cup and he is fantastic for them!

As I say some of my facts may be wrong about last season as we were slumming it in the championship :o

Bothroyd in England team :)
Milner,Barry and Richards in England team :o
Would like to have seen Davies play some more especially considering he scored 2 good goals against Spurs.

We finished 7th, however we were in with a shout of finishing 4th up until the last few games of the season.

Again, without the injury problems and having little focus on Europe, we should be able to concentrate on the League and at least compete at the same level as last season.

Anything below 6th with the players we have available to us is a disaster imo.

I would be very very surprised to see Liverpool in top 6. There squad bar 4 players is incredibly average and teams such as Spurs and Villa are much stronger and will probably take 5th and 6th.

Villa's squad isn't better than ours and their first 11 certainly isn't.

Liverpool squad should be about 7th or 8th, they're 11th, it's not a massive disaster tbh, although I do think they can play better more often.

Care to come up with squads other than last season's top 5 which are better than Liverpool's?

I wouldn't take more than 2 Villa players in our first 11 (Warnock and Young), and the rest of Villa's squad are no better than any of our squad players. Same again with Everton; they've got a few players who you could argue are better than our first 11 but beyond that (man for man), they're not as good as our players.

We're massively underperforming both in terms on results and performances and the man responisible in the manager.

It's pretty embarrassing but not surprising that when Liverpool finished 7th last season, it was Benitez's fault and we underachieved, but Roy takes the same squad and does (so far) far worse and it's because the squad isn't good enough. You can't have it both ways.

Who the **** is that annoying cockney **** commentating on the Barca game.

Messi's now on 19 in 16!

Selling Alonso was absolutely stupid though. It's amazing the difference it made.

His consistency was why I rated him above Gerrard even. Technically fantastic player it was a mistake selling him alright..

Did Alonso want to leave or was he just sold on for the money?

He was made available the year before he actually left because we wanted the money (and he hadn't performed to his best for the previous 2 years).

The year he did leave, the club didn't want to sell him but he wanted to go. No doubt, partly done to what happened the previous summer but even so, I couldn't see him turning down Real had that not happened anyway.

The money we got for him was fantastic though and had the club been able to reinvest it, it's possible that selling him would have been the right thing to do anyway.

I thought he was getting sold to invest in the Barry man?

Not exactly. Benitez wanted to sign Barry regardless (and reportedly to play on the left side of a diamond), which is why there was the big fall out with Rick Parry at the time. Had Alonso been sold it would have been to fund another player.

And that was the season before he was sold. The season he eventually went, the club didn't want to sell him.
