English League Football ** spoilers ** [21st - 23rd August 2010]

Tell me, what are these players you speak of? I seriously cannot think of anyone in our team which suits a 4-4-2.
Regardless of what the media thinks, Gerrard is not a CM, not anymore. It was partially his fault for not tracking Barry which lead to the first goal. Everytime he is in the middle he shuts off and we get punished.
We have no good combo of strikers to play up top, and Torres plays terribly bad with a strike partner.
We have no pacy wide players who offer width, everyone cuts inside (ala 4-3-3 4-2-3-1)

Hodgson's played the majority of last season with his wingers cutting in (Davies, Duff, Dempsey, Gera)...if you had to be picky for his system, it's either buying another winger...and using Jovanovic upfront with Torres as the more target man. Or signing another big striker. Midfield wise you could use Gerrard further up the field, which he could turn to doing (similar to how he used Gera/Dempsey, sitting behind the striker) which is where Gerrard looks better. It's just whether Mascherano is sold, who can be used. If he sticks to how he played Fulham, Poulsen/Lucas will be the deeper clean up players, and Gerrard further ahead, with Cole. When Cole is available you could pretty much play either of Cole/Gerrard just behind Torres. Or use Cole on a wing.

For as bad as we were (we being Hodgson and the players), it's only 2 games into the season and 2 hard games at that. Lets not get too carried away.

Yep.

My final words on the topic will be this:
How many times was rafa blasted by the public and 'pundits' for playing players out of position?

Yet Roy chose to play a CB at LB despite Aurelio being available.
Yet Roy chose to play a 4-4-2 when Ngog is a youth prospect who has played all of his games as a lone striker. When Torres is best played as a lone striker.
Yet he played a system we did not have the personnel available to actually play.

Yet Roy is immune from criticism.

.. sigh.

Exactly, when Liverpool lose to say, Wigan and struggle to get a draw against WBA, then you can start getting the pitchforks out.

City looked very solid and difficult to break down but, considering they won 3-0, they didn't actually create an awful lot. Aside from Barry's goal, I don't remember them creating anything clear cut. The penalty never should have been and the less said about the defending at that corner the better. I think their real problem will be finding the right balance between attack and defence, and at the moment their side is too weighted towards the latter.

Well, going by Hodgson's away record it might happen :p. He was never going to come straight into the team and win both games vs Arsenal and then go to Man City away after what has been spent.

Not good performance from Liverpool. Play was sloppy, we gave away possession cheaply. The chances that did come our way were stopped wonderfully by Hart, great performance from him.

Man City were great, I have to admit, solid and neat and tidy. They passed the ball well and defended strongly.

I was disappointed that Mascha didn't play. I just hope we get a good price for him

It's gonna get WORSE? ;)

They've held onto their prestige pretty well considering how little they've won in the last 20 years, they'll be lucky to even make it into the top half unless Torres stays fit all season, which he won't. ;)

Thought Lucas was very anonymous except for one foray forward early in the second half and one clearance.

The way we were set up done him no favours whatsoever. 2 out and out strikers, 2 forwards playing on the wings and Gerrard leaving him isolated all game.

Even Masch would have had a hard time.

Okay i said i wouldnt post again but had to post this gem i found :D

Don't know how that happened.
We did everything Sky said,
Two up front,
Man to man on corners,
playing Stevie G "in the middle,"
where he's best,
and we got rid of Rafa.
Why did'nt we win.

A Spurs fan, mocking Liverpool, about how much they've won in the last 20 years?

*Goes off to check Wiki*

LOL

My post was slightly tongue in cheek, but my point was that Liverpool have managed to keep their profile from the 80s as one of the top clubs not only in England but in Europe, this is seriously under threat of slipping away from them. It happens to the best of clubs, but it's about time you stepped back and let someone else take your spot.

;)

We will always keep our high profile; it kind of sticks when you dominate European football for as long as we did. Last season is a perfect example; despite having a squad that cost considerably less than yours and City's, we were expected to comfortably finish ahead of you.

Being a small club you'll always get an easy ride in the press ;)
