Epic Games Store now open!

You need a better source that some random on a gaming forum. Can anyone clarify his allegations?
That site is blocked on my work connection, what data does it say its gathering?

https://www.pcgamer.com/uk/epic-steam-data-reddit/

Basically confirms the findings but spins it to make it not look bad

It's worth noting that the Dev behind Steam Spy now works for Epic as director of publishing strategy

I personally wouldn't trust that they're not actually collecting data

Unsurprisingly, those sites are blocked on my work connection too. Any tldr of what it is they are gathering?

Epic VP of Engineering said "We only import your Steam friends with your explicit permission. The launcher makes an encrypted local copy of your localconfig.vdf Steam file. However information from this file is only sent to Epic if you choose to import your Steam friends, and then only hashed ids of your friends are sent and no other information from the file."

I don't have my Steam account connected, only my PlayStation Network one. So I guess it shouldn't be doing anything with my Steam data. Except it is and they're supposedly going to fix that.

Tim Sweeney said ""The current implementation is a remnant left over from our rush to implement social features in the early days of Fortnite. It's actually my fault for pushing the launcher team to support it super quickly and then identifying that we had to change it. Since this issue came to the forefront we're going to fix it."

Tut tut. I for one am never going to buy a purchase from their store, even if Borderlands 3 is exclusive to it.

Whats contained in that vdf file? If its just my friends list then I'm not bothered, its not like I have Julian Assange on my friends list or anything :D

I think it's all your friends, all your games, the games you played last. It's harmless stuff really but the idea that they are poking around for it without asking your permission is what gets me.

Ah, well yeah , nothing in that which bothers me, they can know all of that. Its all trivial. I suppose theres a principle of the permission thing but to be perfectly honest I know full well that if a title I really wanted came out on Epic store only, I would still buy it rather than watch my friends enjoying playing it while I miss out on the fun. But yeah, my friends list, my games and when I last played them..thats as harmless as someone making a note of what colour shirt I wear each day so I've got no beef if that's all the info it is.

I mean it's harmless for random strangers to have a nose through your kitchen cupboards

Something something GDPR
We've seen the fallout from Huawei spying on users, it's not really out of the realms of possibility that Tencent would be spying on us through the Epic launcher too

In a move that some might claim is an attempt to distract from the latest bad press, Epic have released a roadmap for the store's development on Trello.

The next six months will supposedly bring user reviews, wishlists, play time tracking, mod support, and cloud saves amongst others.

Yeah, it's probably going to need some sort of tracking software to do that.
Oh, wait... :D

They might also bring that super modern feature of actually having the service send an email to verify your signup email address, or even implement some sort of 2FA if they really want to push the boat out and provide a luxury service...

What a joke

What a joke

In this day and age, I'm not signing up to anything that takes my money if it's not got 2FA.

Think they have 2FA don't they? Not actually at my PC to check but found this.
