To sack or not to sack

I think this is what's more damning for ETH, the players were trying, they just weren't able to take on board what he wanted. I'm sure a few of them didn't like him though.

Why is there no plan? For all we know Ashworth was always planning to get Amorim, with his coaches, and then sign the best possible players that fit his system. To be honest it's on the manager to make it work, just because ETH failed doesn't mean everyone else will. There is no obvious elite manager who would walk in and fix everything - football is not that simple.
Was the play to conduct a review then extend his contract in June and sack him in Oct? Was it the VAR decision that sacked him?

I agree that was the wrong move, but I suspect they wanted to try and get to the end of the season and then review things. You know my view on the manager, he should have been sacked last year.

They fumbled things due to the unexpected FA Cup win, which was ridiculous.

Anyone is another potential failure. There is no guarantee when it comes to managers. That is why the big clubs switch so often until they luck into a good one.

Exactly. Emery failed at Arsenal but is clearly a very good manager. Ancellotti went to Everton for Christs sake and he has managed everywhere. Conte, Mourinho, Nagelsmann. The list is exhaustive of managers who have done brilliantly at times but been sacked from top jobs.

Managers need to come in at the right time to the right set up at the club.

The Athletic guys are speculating that the ExCo meeting last month set the wheels in motion in identifying the successor. This was after the Spurs game in which the first half was probably one of the poorest displays by a Manchester United team in living memory. Given how swiftly things seem to have moved in 24 hours I think this has credibility and I'm pleased about that. It remains to be seen if we can land Amorim but directionally it looks like the right sort of move.

I've yet to hear anyone (other than rival fans) make a case for giving Erik ten Hag more time. The truth is that things were getting worse and from a very low base in 23/24. The emotion of the Cup Final win probably had something to do with him staying but at least we know they looked for better. You cannot ignore the two trophies, especially in an era where City are so dominant but the football was terrible, the performances predictable and the regression all too apparent.

Ten Hag cut an increasingly forlorn figure and he didn't have the charisma or club legend status to fall back on when things got tough. I sensed he lost the fans in the Tottenham game when we saw every failing condensed into 45 minutes. His folly to try and discount that performance illustrates why he cannot be the manager of our club. Over the 2.25 seasons he was in charge we can point to 3/4 highlights. The cup wins, knocking Barca out of the CL and The 4-3 vs Liverpool. Really that's pretty pathetic given the spend on the squad. I don't celebrate sacking managers as it's another sign of failure but I'm glad the club has acted now and we get a chance to be hopeful again. That hope had evaporated with Erik.

Looking forward, new manager and probably new players, is it going to get to a point where the club can't afford to continue to spend billions more on players and managers? How sustainable is it?

I think it would work out well if RvN takes the cup game tomorrow, and Amorim starts on Thursday morning. Gives him a few days to get a plan in place for Chelsea.

But Chelsea will be a tricky game so they might want him to start on Monday...

Plan: nobble Palmer. Thats literally all you have to do. Chelsea look decent at the moment almost entirely because of him.

We need a strong manager who takes no **** from players, not afraid to drop the big money earners either. A manager who knows tactics and how to adjust them to suit the current state of play in any given game. A manager who will make substitutes when actually needed, not wait to give players 5 minutes at the end of a game. A manager who can work with young kids.

I have zero knowledge of this Amorim, I have seen he has done well with his current team but from what I can make out, the Portugal league is like the Dutch league, a few levels below the Premier league. I have no idea what to think.

yeah - kind of where I net out...Not really sure what I want next.

Would love to have seen Simeone at United - but he's never going to leave Athletico....

I think Poch would have been ok/decent in the summer if they had pulled the trigger then on ETH, but I'd love to know/get some reasoning for why they decided to stay with ETH and then bin him 9 league games in.... It wasn't working before the summer and clearly hasn't after.

Last season was a right off due to injuries. It is easy to forget his first season was 76 points and cup. Our second best tally since SAF retired and we won a cup. We also played the most games that season and knocked out La Liga champions Barcelona over two legs and deep into all competitions.

This season was dead in the water after everyone was told they were looking for a new manager and the players have been diabolical.

The Westham game was a case in point. We dominated the first half and should have put the game to bed. Westham came out second half the players as always collapsed. I can imagine ETH going to say Bayern and being hugely successful in the future.

I guess it is time for Man Utd to ruin another manager with Amorim.

Adam, the majority of his tenure was terrible. Spending an absolute fortune and going backwards every week. Were you actually watching our games at all? We looked pretty atrocious 90% of the time.

What managers have we ruined? Moyes was Moyes. LvG was well past his best, and so was Mourinho...

Ten Hag has been the first logical appointment and unfortunately despite a lot of backing and support, he failed. It happens in football, it's not the end of the world.

You could appoint prime SAF to this group of players and they'd finish mid table in the current PL ffs.

Edit: what he would do though is bin off players with bad attitudes and only keep the winners. I mean come on, which players would SAF have signed, let alone kept? Fernandes, Martinez, Eriksen, Garnacho, maybe Hojlund?

Yes I think you totally forget the first season like it didn't exist.

When you look at it methodically First season was great. Played the most games in the league bar City, won a league cup, got to the FA Cup final and beat Barcelona who were league champions that year in the Europa League. Losing to the eventual winners. 76 points which was good enough for 3rd. His win percentage was 70%. He also had to deal with Ronaldo and Maguire.

Second season was a right off due to injuries (Played double digit back 4 partnerships) but we somehow managed to get to a FA Cup final and win it showing we can still play.

This season has been a mess but it is all on the players rather than ETH. You only have to look at his last game with Westham to see that.

Bring in a new manager by all means but the players will do exactly the same to Amorim like before. There is such a weak mentality at the club in the dressing room.

The first season was just about OK, it wasn't that great. You could argue the more work ETH did, the worse things got, which is actually what happened.

You can't just keep saying the second season was a write-off due to injuries... we've now got these injured defenders back, and signed new ones - and we're even worse than last season?!

Yes, the players aren't great, but that doesn't change the fact the manager was awful too. You'd need to be insane to let ETH replace another set of players for £500m based on his current body of work. No club on the planet would do that.

To say this season has been "all on the players" is frankly crazy.

It's definitely not all on the players, but neither is it all on Ten Hag. Like most things there are a number of things that went wrong. Changing manager won't fix everything and we still have a lot of work to rebuild this club.

His point still stands. At no point during EtHs time at United have I thought. "This is great, we are playing exciting and entertaining football and in a few years we will be winning big things". Even the first season wasn't particular good from that perspective. That could be excused due to not having the players he wanted but hes never delivered. Its always been a promise of "when X happens". Well X never seemed to happen for him.

I absolutely agree, but the manager is the key figure and it's clear to almost everyone that Ten Hag isn't good enough.

Who cares about his first season? It's done and dusted, in this industry you need to be forward looking, not being Jose and talking about your previous titles and accolades.

Let's talk about the recent past such as almost losing to Coventry after being 3-0 up, or taking the lead in European games only to absolutely crumble to a loss or draw, including Harry Maguire, a CB that clearly wasn't part of ETHs future plans, grabbing a last injury time minute goal.

What about the Chelsea game where we were winning from the 67th minute, to the 90+10 minutes, only to lose the game.

There's some embarrassing stat regarding the amount of games we've conceded multiple goals.

£600m spent and we don't look like scoring most games, and can't defend for toffee either.

It has been shocking in terms of results, performances and the amount of money spent. There's absolutely no excusing ETHs time at the club. He should have been sacked for wanting Antony at the club, regardless of how much we paid for him (which wasn't his decision).

Hopefully he maintains his transfer policy of buying ex-Ajax players he has worked with. Perhaps we can sell him the Dutch dross we've brought in for him.
