Too true ...
I don't think I had to sign a register once for a lecture when I was at University. But this was a while ago before they had all these nonsense degrees in things like grass mowing.
Some of the classes I went to took register, mainly labs so they would know if your lab reports were based on actual lab work. Otherwise it was to catch out students who didn't go to lectures then went to the lecturers for help afterwards.
They would just say that you should have gone to the lecture if they had a record that you didn't.
If there are a lot of foreign students on your course they may do so as well, cause if foreign students are not going to classes they get kicked out the country, so maybe it has more to do with that than "nonsense degrees" and hand holding.
