For the record, when I went to university at Brunel 13 years ago they passed a register round in lectures. Now I'm doing my doctorate at Surrey they also pass a register round at taught modules. Both top universities for the subjects.

It isn't so much about how a University sites in subject rankings, but the style of University. Without a doubt, the world leading universities like Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol, Edinburgh tend to not take registers (except for some externally awarded qualifications) and give you much more independence than newer/other Universities.

I was/am (awkward) at Edinburgh, we still got registers taken in most of our classes - then again, doing Chinese, the class sizes were never more than 20 or so. We did have a fair number of foreign students too, and always got told that their attendance had to be taken for visa purposes, so they checked all of us to hold us all to the same standard.

It was a bit hit and miss though, orals, grammar and tutorial classes were always checked, as was Chinese Economics, but Literature/Translation/History never bothered. I missed dozens of classes for various reasons anyway, no one ever mentioned it.
