That sounds like you didn't register with the uni, which is why you dont have access to portal etc. You best go to student admin, instead of your home departments secretarial staff for advice.

For the record, when I went to university at Brunel 13 years ago 
they passed a register round in lectures. Now I'm doing my doctorate at Surrey they also pass a register round at taught modules. Both top universities for the subjects.

What would you have done if you'd followed the timetable, gone to the lecture room/hall and it had been moved at the last minute? As frequently happens/happened when I went to uni.
