Essential Android Apps

If you use google maps then it needs to download the maps from the internet. If you use copilot then the maps are installed on the SD card so there is no need to connect to the internet.

So if I download google maps from my wifi at home, then set it up for nav when i'm out and about will it use the internet connection or GPS?

Might be a dumb question.

It needs to download the Maps from the internet, unless google have managed to fit mapping for the whole world in 5MB. It will use GPS to plot your location and t'internet to retrieve the mapping.

Funny, I have done that, I have the brut.all maps installed and nav launcher, but I don't have a navigate menu when I select menu, should I have? Or is this where nav launcher comes in?

I haven't managed to get it working yet as Ineed to download the voice program for direction, but I will do that when I have wi-fi access tonight.

Seems I may be getting a bit impatient.

The Google maps update adds beta support for nav in the UK. Much easier than getting some backwards way of doing it. Will see what it's like tonight.

Right I think am dreaming but.......

I'm sure I saw an app, where you place the phone to your mouth it then makes your mouth into a funny animation but in real time and changes your voice. A funny kind of thing.

Was I dreaming is there anything like this?

Cheers, but with my old Windows Mobile phone you could set it so that as soon as you hit the shutter it would auto upload (though only to MS' Mesh service), so I'm after something similar for Android and Picasa. Of course after taking a pic I could hit the share button and upload it, but I'm lazy :p

For those people who are trying to get their alarm working with a task killer please make sure you exclude (add to the ignore list):

Clock
Settings
Calendar

I had the issue as well when my alarm wasn't going out and now i've fixed it :)

p.s. I'd look into whether or not a task killer is needed as there's conflicting ideas on whether or not one is required, or indeed good for your phone :)

New apps i've downloaded that work a treat are:

Network Monitor - This is like Netcounter but better as it doesn't have an issue with wifi and just looks cooler (it has a live graph showing you the current download/upload speed available :))

APNDroid - This is a simple toggle for switching on and off 3G - good for battery life. Also includes a handy widget.

ColorNote - This is the best notepad app i've found, also includes a handy little widget

Opening the browser hasn't slowed (as far as I can tell). I also spent some time cleaning up my contacts - moving everything into gmail and merging duplicates so this has significantly reduced the size of my contact list. It could be why I've not noticed any slow dows in the people app. I'm going to continue running without Task Killer for now as I don't seem to need it.

This sounds exactly what I need to do - how do you merge contacts?
