I just switch off data when I'm not particular bothered about receiving mail etc. I know it sort of defeats the purpose of a smartphone, but the amount of extra battery life you get is massive. My desire lasts for days without charging now I turn data off at night and at work.

Days? Really?

The gmail app is much better, don't think I can use my uni mail with it though which is probably the most important. I've been trying to ditch hotmail for years, I signed up with their mail eons ago and because important stuff still comes through from time to time I have to keep it for now. Slowly migrating to gmail though.

Did I read you can add POP and IMAP accounts to gmail on the web? Would that then work with the gmail andoid app?

Yes you can do this. It's pretty easy, there should be info on your uni's website to give you the details you need.

A small but nice feature is that you can put all your uni emails into a distinct folder when they 'arrive' in your gmail account.

Works a treat. Your uni email will probably request you change passwords every 60 days or so. Remember to change it in Gmail too or you'll stop getting your mails!
