Essential Android Apps

Is it me or are the vast majority of app, things that access the internet.

there needs to be more stand alone apps, as internet connectivity cannot be guaranteed all the time. In fact just the other day i was on the train to London and only on a few occasions was i able to go online.

Navigation apps that require a connection are a big fail if you aren't in a 3g area.

afaik nav apps will use google maps, which is far too large to store on your phone. if they don't use google maps then they need to pay whoever supply maps, which afaik is one company in the uk and the one googlemaps uses so it's just an additional cost for no real benefit. what would be decent is if you could plot your route on your phone whilst you have a connection, then the phone downloads the maps you need. i suppose with that said if you need a navigation app then you're going to be travelling to somewhere with 3g any way.

Google Maps 5 does exactly that, it now caches to SD as well and pre-caches potential roads you might go off track n while navigating.

It can do point a to point b fine, so long as you have a connection when you first set the route. It will then cache the route. However should you be int he country and then try to change the route you're screwed.

Google maps uses TeleAtlas, the maps are vector tiles, so would take up no more space than the maps any sat nav comapany uses. I would imagine that since maps are cached anyway that google does have permission for users to download the maps, it's just more in google's interests to keep the user online.

Navteq are afaik the largest mapping company around. They are owned by Nokia, hence Ovi maps being free and no need for a data connection. Nokia has no vested interest either to keep the user online, so that probably helps too.

I didn't want to talk about sat navs, just apps in general. The majority of them depend on a data connection and rarely offer anything more than a mobile website would anyway.

I think in the future more websites will be optimised for mobiles and the rate that apps are coming out will slow, as who wants to install 150 apps on their phone when they can just use bookmarks.

Anyway it was just an observation from my recent train trip.
