Essential Android Apps

these task killers are really damaging they do more harm than good

I don't know. Now and again the official Facebook won't update giving me a 'null error' and I use advanced task killer to close it, and it works again. I've tried re-installing Facebook, but now and again I get the same error. I think it's fine to use with troublesome apps, but not as be all and end all to manage multi-tasking apps.

I agree.:)

seriously read the links, using task killers is daft! android task manger is all you need if that. if that app is fruity uninstall and leave a comment - its the only way it will improve

I've just read that Droid den article linked, read the first few comments for the whole picture.

Yeah I understand, the first one is written buy a mod from a big Android forum I use. Well anyway I get why its not good to use them

The basic android task manager is good enough for that.

FireFox beta is out. Still sucks :D

Really? I think it's come a long way from the Alpha's.

The only minus points are:
- Text looks crap unless you zoom in, which isn't an issue in WebKit so should be an easy fix

- The slide to access tabs/settings needs to snap, or have the detection settings adjusted so you can't select either by accident

- Better rendering

If they fix those, the add-on ability and Bookmark sync will make it better than WebKit in my opinion.

It's defiantly a long way from alpha but not really usable (hence the suckage :D)
I can't wait as it's virtually identical to Safari with page rendering (double tap to zoom in on any element too) so should offer a low power alternative without being rubbish.

Skyfire uses Gecko over webkit too, that's shows how good it can be! (6190ms Sunspider JavaScript benchmark on my stock desire!)

I agree, most ppl shouldn't need to worry about task managers, worst comes to worst just restart the phone :) (personally I love having greater control)

Right been having a play with a lot of apps today :o :D

Tried out some browsers as the stock android browser seems soooooo slow now for some reason (tried clearing cache as well). Can't decide between 2 browsers at the minute, both seem really good and the speed is pretty similar, so here are my thoughts on the ones that I have tried out:

- Xscope - Nice UI, very fast, some pretty neat features

- Skyfire - Very nice browser, speed seems to be just as good as xscope, UI is nice as well, also has a built in flash video player, but it doesn't have as many features as the likes of dolphin or xscope

- Dolphin HD - Very slow browser for everything I found (kind of like firefox in some ways when compared to chrome), lots of features though and the UI is kind of ok but looks pretty tacky IMO

- Opera - Again nice UI, pretty fast but it renders the pages completely wrong for some websites e.g. for overclockers forums the thread titles are like all squashed together and some images are missing etc.

So trying to decide between skyfire and xscope, there's just something about skyfire which I really like, but I can't quite work out what it is yet lol :p :o

Although think I will be using xscope for now :D

Also find the stock android keyboard a fair bit better for me than the HTC_IME mod keyboard.

With the HTC_IME keyboard I always seem to be hitting the "." button instead of the "space" button , also one quite annoying bug I found is if you have the landscape text box mode on, sometimes when I text, it won't seem to update at all (would still be blank), but yet when I turn back to portrait mode, the entire text will be there

Which browser do you think is better, skyfire or xscope?

I really like the ui of the latest xscope but after much arsing about I always seem to return to stock browser. Not ideal but in terms of rendering it gets most stuff right. I like the way skyfire deals with videos though.

Since I moved to SlideIT keyboard I haven't looked back. Sadly, it seems to be overlooked with all the hype surrounding swype. Can't see myself using a standard keyboard on a phone ever again!

Yeah I also kept on returning to the stock browser as well months ago when I tried the 3rd party browsers out, they just didn't feel as good compared to the stock back then but now it's seems to be a completely different case.

Yeah I forgot to mention about the built in flash player for skyfire in my previous post :o, it's a major plus for me as well (although would only use it until leshak and CM developers have developed froyo for the samsung spica :D and then I would just use the proper flash app :D)

Wow , £5.19 for a keyboard , are you crazy :p

Although personally I don't like those type of keyboards at all, just can't get use to the swiping part of it, prefer the good old way of typing :p
