Euro 2012 Qualifiers 7/8/11 October ** Spoilers**

Like this:

2 - Hosts Poland and Ukraine
9 - Group winners
1 - The second-placed team with the highest number of points from matches
4 - The eight remaining second-placed teams will take part in two-legged play-offs to decide the four remaining qualifiers.

How does the highest number of points work if there's some groups with less teams in?

Points won vs the bottom team in the group are subtracted from the overall total for the groups with 6 teams in them.

That's the only way to allow the teams in the smaller groups to have a chance at automatic place through finishing second.

According to the beeb that'll likely be Sweden or (Grp E) or Portugal/Denmark (Group H)

I'm following 3 teams in this at the moment Scotland, Belgium and Ireland (Scotland is my team Ireland the wifey's team and Belgium where I live at the moment.)

Dearly hope one of them gets through although Ireland has the best chance at the moment.

They are playing against the team a point behind where as Scotland and Belgium have to match the scores from Czech and Turkey respectively big ask as it looks like both would have to win and only a fool would bet against Spain and Germany.

Rep of Ireland v Armenia, GpB, 18:45, Sky Sports 1

Spain v Scotland, GpI, 19:45, BBC 2
Lithuania v Czech Republic, GpI, 19:45

Germany v Belgium, GpA, 18:00
Turkey v Azerbaijan, GpA, 18:00

It'd certainly be nice if Lithuania beat the Czech Republic as that would mean that Scotland didn't have to get anything against Spain, if there's a draw in that game then we still need a draw or better as I'm assuming goal difference would count?

Not exactly; goal difference between teams level on points is what counts first. Scotland have negative goal difference versus the Czechs however, so the end result would be the same as you describe.

Essentially from Scotland's point of view they should try and get at least a point, if they go behind against Spain they should throw everything at them because losing 1-0 or 5-0 will make no difference.
