European Grand Prix 2011, Valencia Street Circuit - Race 8/19

Never mind, your right

“Finally, with immediate effect, it will no longer be possible to reprogram the ECU configuration between qualifying and the race in the expectation that this will discourage extreme ECU set-ups for qualifying – previously electronic access to the ECU under parc fermé conditions had been explicitly permitted.”

Then how does the fuel and other settings work. As that means they don't hold a few engine maps on the ecu which is what I assumed happened.
Or I sit literally just turning down the fuel flow rate with the same map?

TBH, I don't know, but clearly the settings they can select on the wheel are only a limited list of the options available to the engineers through a complete remap. Theres probubly a technical document somewhere that details it.

I'd always assumed there were a few different full engine maps that they could swap to freely at and point during qualifying/race.

Maybe they do just limit fuel flow, but would that really prolong the life of the engine?

I'm looking forward to this race. These days, even 2 weeks is too long to wait for the next race.

Its not a great track, however, DRS & Pirelli tyres mean that any track becomes exciting, packed with action. Thank God processions are thing of the past.

I shall have to repeat my usual prediction:

1/2. Hamilton/Alonso
3. Vettel/Button.

In Monaco, the red flag prevented Alonso's charge.
In Canada, Jenson "The Animal" Button, knocked both Hamilton and Alonso out.

Law of averages suggests that luck will no longer be able to prevent Hamilton or Alonso from taking the win.

Law of averages also suggests that Vettel's form should start to dip a bit. Depending on how the OTB and special engine mapping effects RBR, it is quite possible that Vettel may not win another race this season.

This could yet turn out to be one of the best seasons ever.

Honestly not going to make any predictions until I've watch FP1 & 2 tomorrow. We don't know enough about how these changes might affect teams.

My prediction is that Vettel won't blow Webber away like he has been doing so far this season now that qualifying engine maps are banned, I'm convinced that's what Red Bull have been doing to keep Vettel on pole. It also explains how McLaren are regularly able to match Vettel in race trim.

Don't forget the accusations haven't just be about OTBD but also the rear wing being much larger, but means they gain a big advantage in qauli as they can use DRS, but lose time in race.
Flexible wings and probably other stuff.

We havent had a boring race so far this season. I think Australia has been the most dull so far, but after they allowed DRS to be used for longer periods (on subsequent tracks), there has been more overtaking, more unpredictability and more action.

I can't imagine there being another boring race this season (though it depends on what your definition of boring is).

I'm not saying that RBR havent been doing that. But lets assume they have been doing this, do you not think that Webber would've kicked up a stink?

Could it not be that Vettel, really is in fantastic form and is now the fastest driver of a single lap?

I'm curious as to peoples quali predictions, it is hard not to say Vettel P1, but last year McLaren were strong here, i think a surprise for RBR and a McLaren front row.

It is banning of something on a switch. However the fia have to approve any software on the ecu. So if the ecu can't have the software on it and thus the switch won't work. I am sure fia will be checking the ECU extra hard for the next couple of races. If they even need to, the telemetry should show it easily.

Its not re programming as prety sure that's against the rules, as I understand it there are just a few engine maps on the ecu and you can switch between them. Fia are just going to make. Sure there isn't a qaulifying one on the ecu.

I asked a few questions on F1 tecnical about Ecus and it's reckoned that sauber have over 40 maps selectable from the steering wheel. 10 per tyre configuration.

I'm starting to wonder if the FIA have got wind of another form of crude traction control being used, like in the maps a few years ago.

And there was me thinking this was a lot more clear now they had a standard ECU, seems not. :D

The guys on f1 technical seemed to think the Maps were not subject to FIA approval upto this point in time.

Not something I'd paid much attention to as I assumed it was a lot more standard than it seems to be.

But if they can store maps, then the ban this weekend makes no difference as it just stops reprogramming in parc ferme.
Standard ecu where never to sto stop teams using there own stuff, just to lock down what they can and of course if you know the course code it's a lot easier to find whats happening.
I'm shocked that they don't need fia approval.

The standard ECU just means you wont have to have team specific hardware to read the ECU mapping code.

You do still have to actually read the code though, and it looks as though the FIA haven't been so far.

I don't think that Button or the mistake will worry him.
What would worry RBR and Vettel is the fact that Ferrari (at Monaco) and McLaren (at Canada) hunted him down. The RBR car no longer appears to be the dominant (race) car. The few things that RBR have going for them is their ability to innovate, Vettel's fantastic form and Vettel's big lead.
