European Grand Prix 2011, Valencia Street Circuit - Race 8/19

You have changed your tune :D Red Bull have the 3rd fastest car don't they?

If you read my previous posts, you will see that I stated that it is VERY close at the top. The fastest cars have similar race pace. I did state that over the last 2 races, RBR were third best.

Some tracks will suit some cars, while other tracks will suit other cars.

This track was very very hot and perhaps this was the reason why the McLaren cars didnt do too well.

It may also have something to do with the new engine maps, which obviously McLaren previously used to their advantage. Perhaps this moved McLaren back a little.

In the last 3 races, I believe RBR, Ferrari and McLaren have been fastest in one race each. Based on this, I would say there is nothing to choose between the top 3 teams (in terms of race pace).

I am hoping that the RBR team suffer a little, once the big change kicks in at Silverstone (remember the 'engine map alterations' banning at Valencia was a minor change).

I still say that the top 3 teams, at present are similar in performance, but Vettel is making that RBR car look damn good. Vettel is in immense form right now and I think even Hamilton/Alonso would struggle to beat Vettel (in the same team), in Vettel's current form.

With out a doubt, Vettel has raised his game this year and this is evident by the fact that he has beaten his team-mate in 100% of the races, compared to last year, when Webber was occasionally getting the better of Vettel.

Fear not though. I said this once and I shall say it again: 'no driver can maintain top form through an entire season' and I fully expect to see Vettel suffering a little, at some stage, during the season. When will we know that this is happening? When we see Webber finishing in front of Vettel.

The WDC title itself is now going to be uber difficult for Alonso or Hamilton to win, simply because they are running out of races and they need to ensure that Vettel is kept off the podium - something that so far this season, has proved impossible.

Rivals admit defeat, almost...

I find it very strange to see top sportsmen, openly admitting defeat, with so many races left.

Even if they are feeling deflated/dejected/beaten...you should never ever let your opponents know you are feeling this way. It is better to stay quiet and wait and see how things play out. This goes for any sport. Hell, even when Man Utd played Barca in the Champions League final a few months back, they didn't admit defeat until they were beaten.

Better to say something along the lines of, "It is very very difficult to win the title now, however, while it is mathematically possible for us to win the title, we shall keep fighting for the title. We here at McLaren/Ferrari have a tradition of winning and we do not throw in the towel half way through the season".

The Vettel/RBR combination is clearly the best on the grid in terms of speed. Dominating a championship with great driving is all fine and well, but I cant help thinking that winning the championship halfway through the season because you just stuck it on pole and then led to the flag at almost every race is a bit of a boring and unmemorable way to win it.

Tbh, all Vettel needs is a bad Q1 and to start from 17th and go on to get on the podium to get people thinking he deserves the championship. At the moment he has shown us is is a very good qualifier and has raw speed. He just needs a champions drive of some sort to prove to us he can race too.

.

I think exactly the opposite. I think that the Red Bull hugely flatters Vettell. He is ofcourse a very good driver but i think Alonso or Hamilton could match him in that car, if not beat him.

It is hard to judge Vettell though purely because all we ever see him do these days is qualify on pole and just stay there. I think this is mainly down to how fast that Red Bull is.

F1 is very different to most other sports, in that the "top sportsman" is only a relatively small part of the total performance. We know F1 is mostly about the car - that's not the same in other sports where personal performance has the biggest impact.

Re Vettel vs the car - sure this year's Red Bull is probably just about as dominant as the Brawn in '09. It is possible that the other teams will close the performance gap like then, but unlikely as Red Bull are far better funded than Brawn were in 09. There's no reason to Red Bull can't keep up the rate of development.

Vettel (186) is clearly in awesome form - Webber (109) can't keep in touch. That's a huge difference between teammates. I'm not sure Hamilton/Alonso/Button would be beating Vettel if they were his teammate. We'll never know.

wouldn't be surprised is mclaren and ferrari start development on next year early.

its a race for 2nd in the championship now.

dont give up hope just yet

Really hoping some one else can lock out front row from Silverstone onwards (with exhaust gases being clamped down further)

Forcing Vettel back (even slightly) into the pack for the first few corners could be really interesting, putting him much more under pressure etc etc

From the times it looked like JB would have been faster than LH and Massa today without his KERS fault holding him back for over 1/2 the race (at least 12 - 14s lost to LH from that issue) , and I wouldnt be surprised if thats what kiept Rosberg ahead of him at the start for so long creating that 10s gap to start with.

McLaren were poor this weekend with the high track temps, really hope they can fight for the win / podiums at Silverstone

No point in hoping for a Massa / Webber win (as I cant see either team wanting them to win - unless its very strange circumstances)

Not sure RB was fastest in the race at Monaco, just the easiest circuit of them all to keep faster cars behind you (and with ineffective DRS)

even if vettel didnt get on the front row, he would have to finish 5/6th for several races with the same race winner to close the gap.

and from what we have seen, that aint happening.

Im quite looking forward to the next few races, FIA ban or not we will have a bit of pace, hopefully enough. :)

Good driving from Vettel, tire management was spot on. Conditions seemed to scupper McLaren's chances, overheating the clutch, overheating the KERS and Hamilton just doesn't compromise. His radio did amuse.

On to the good tracks!
