European Grand Prix 2011, Valencia Street Circuit - Race 8/19

Interesting point made by DC - Alonsos happy to be outperforming his cars true pace while Hamilton feels frustrated/constrained with what Mclaren are given him - not surprised how those attitudes show themselves on the race track...

I was driving back to Portsmouth from Swindon so I had to listen to the race on 5Live. They did their best to make it interesting but frankly failed. I had hoped something had been lost by not watching it but it seems the visual version was just as dull as the audio...

just finished watching this.

got a phone call at 12:55 from my dad,

"ive just put half a tank of unleaded in my diesel"

i facepalm.

"i was on my way to the airport with your aunt"

*rageface*

so i race around and manage to pick them up and get to manc airport and back in under an hour.

seems it was all a waste of petrol because this was a rediculously boring race. 1 overtake in the top 6 i recall, alonso on webber.

was hoping for more from mclaren :(

highlight of the race was as they walked up to the podium, all those lovely legs.

f1 forum worth watching online?

Dull dull dull. Even KERS and Pirelli Tyres can't save this disaster of a 'track'. i fully expect it to continue on the calendar for many years to come unfortunately.

Gladiatorial fights were not popular because of the chance of death, they were popular because people like to see people or animals get ripped limb from limb. Fortunately we have moved on a little in the last few centuries.

Why do you think pro boxing is so popular?
Why isn't amateur boxing more popular?

Just took a glance at the table, wow. When you consider Hamilton and Alonso nearly have half the points of vettel after 8 races it's pretty amazing. Especially as thats where most people expect the challenge to come from.

Buttons closest but Hamilton will take far too much many points from him.

It's a stupid comparison. Why is premiership football more popular than amateur football.

Boxing fans don't go to watch people get hurt badly, they go to watch a decent match up. As boxing has become less about making a match and more about watching a decent fighter pick apart someone with half the skills boxing popularity has waned.

Because amatuer boxing is based on three rounds of technical point scoring punches in a gym in Luton, not two massive blokes trying to knock each other out for 12 rounds surrounded by thousands of screaming fans in Las Vegas.

One is a huge spectacle, the other is not.

At no point does the possibility of a pro boxer dying have any bearing on the relative popularity. Sure, there might be a chance but that isn't what makes it the spectacle it is for most people. That's why recently, it's seen a huge decline in popularity due to boring fighters that nobody knows, not because suddenly there is significantly less chance of someone getting killed doing it. Now with David Haye and Amir Kahn around, it's getting a bit more popular here again but it's not because they're any more likely to cause a death, it's just because they're people that fans know and have an interest in who produce reasonably entertaining fights.
