Has anyone explained why the yellow flags were out for the whole length of that straight, rather than just around the next corner where the accident was located?

It was definitely Maldo's fault, but irrespective of blame, Hamilton has lost points.

When driving for the championship, you need to be intelligent and think about the long haul and who it is you are going wheel to wheel with.

Given that Hamilton' tyres were gone and he was most likely going to go backwards (just as Alonso did in Canada), its not worth risking a fight with Maldo (or Massa) and having an off. Its better to nurse your tyres as best as you can and limit the damage (just as Alonso did in Canada). Note that Alonso didn't get involved in any close fights in Canada after his tyres were shot and he still came home in the points.

In any case, its over now. He has to think about the next race. Luckily for him, Vettel didnt get any points either.

As for Alonso: a good drive. Not great (by his standards), but good.

With this season as close as it is, everyone is a rival.

Vettel is a great driver. No question about that.
He could possibly go on to become the greatest driver of all time (he already has some F1 records to his name).
However, right now, Alonso is the best.

The first thing you do when looking at a driver, is compare him to his team-mate, who has the same equipment. And today, I think Alonso almost lapped his team-mate.

He did lap him but you maybe missed Kobi wiping Massa out and also the SC cost Felipe badly
