European Grand Prix 2012, Valencia - Race 8/20

Up to the point where Pasta left the track, completely agree that it's a racing incident. Once Pasta decided to drive into Lewis though, is when it stops being a racing incident, and moves to something far more malicious.

See thats the key... although there are clips of him going right into Hamilton, his saving grace was when he switch his steeing to full left just before he went into Hamilton, and the only reason he did so was because at the point he applied full left, he was riding the kerbs and the wheels we're not touching the ground....

The drivers are not allowed to move onto the racing line again after moving off to defend, and they need to leave 1 cars width in braking zones.

Neither of those apply to this situation. It wasn't a braking zone and Hamilton was taking the racing line through the corners, which he is fully entitled to do.

Drivers aren't allowed to take the racing line if there is a car along side... except it seems on corner exits.
I am not calling for a Hamilton penalty as all drivers do this, I just think they need to change the rule that you need to give space at all times if there is a driver along side.

What a stupid penalty after he had already trashed his own position. It should have been a grid penalty at the next event unless he finished in 3rd then give him a 20 sec pen. So basically a let off.

Pathetic.

Primarily because I thought the FIA had got rid of penalties that changed the result hours after the race.

Secondly because that means they have decided Maldonado is at fault, which sets the presidence that deliberately putting a driver out of the race is only worth a driver through.

And thirdly because its completely different to the Vergne penalty, which was effectively the same situation (one driver crashing into another and putting them out).
 
In some respects I feel for Hamilton since this really does put a dent into his championship chances...

Shock as Valencia actually produces a decent race. Hat off to Alonso, showing once again he is the best driver on the grid at present.
 
Cars where level into the corner - therefore LH HAS to give the space

He is not allowed to force the other car off the track

Firstly, that isn't the rule, secondly, that isn't the rule, and thirdly, they weren't level. Asides from that you're right.

You have to give space IF you can, he couldn't, you're ignoring the laws of physics, a car going speed X can't magically turn to any degree he wants. Hamilton commited to a corner and a line BEFORE Maldonado tried to jump up the inside, there was no way for Hamilton to turn sharper because a car can't magically turn to avoid some idiot who goes full speed into a gap that isn't there.

Maldonado KNOWS that Hamilton will be in that space before he makes the move and Hamilton at that point had no choice about it. Hamilton jams the wheel to the right as much as possible, back end goes out, he spins, he hits Maldonado(unless he isn't there), Hamilton jams on the brakes, the wheels lock, he goes straight on he hits Maldonado(unless he isn't there). Maldonado brakes late trying to get past Hamilton AFTER Hamilton has made his move started to slow and commited to going around the corner. Maldonado had a choice to wait for a better overtaking move, try and make a move in a gap that isn't there, or to smash into Hamilton, there was one right choice and he didn't make it.

He didn't run him off the road, by that idea anyone can brake late into any corner, go wide and insist the car infront following a normal line should have simply turned tighter to leave room. You can't leave room nor do you have to leave room for a car that isn't or shouldn't be there, nor is there any rule that suggests you can't go around the corner as normal incase someone decides to brake late and force his way into the gap. You leave room WHEN the car is there not incase a car might be there.

EDIT:- 20 second penalty for smashing the third place driver out of the race, complete freaking joke. ignoring everything else, who it is, the places and where he finished. He rejoined the track in a decent speed corner, in the middle of the corner, its insanely dangerous people coming off the straight would have had to take avoiding action as he was going slowly by that point, managed to lose control on the kerb and would have been slow coming out of the corner. There is a run off there because its completely unsafe to rejoin the track in that situation. Should have been a black flag, nothing less and because of that and previous incidents of smacking cars when completely unsafe and not necessary, a hefty fine and a grid penalty at the next race.

Well the other thing is that it doesn't even give Williams a decent reason to reprimand him, all it's done is drop Maldonado a point and give it to Senna instead, as a team they're no worse off really.
 
So for this complete baboon to be banned he 'might' have to kill someone next time.

How many times has he done this now? It's 3 times ain't it?
 
Consistency never was the FIAs strong point though ;)

The only consistent thing about them is there consistent inconsistency.

How can Vergne be a fine and 10 place grid drop, but Maldonado only a driver through?

Assuming that the increment of penalty could be drive through, stop go, 5 place drop, 10 place drop, and then 10 place drop and a fine, that makes Vergnes move 5 degree's 'worse' than Maldonados, which is retarded.
