European Grand Prix 2016, Baku - Race 8/21

Out on track you mean?

I seriously doubt tampering with tyres off the track would be allowed (or was allowed) in any way whatsoever.

No, it was in Parc Fermé - like Abyss says 'reconditioning' the tyres.

I'm sure Ted's explanation was along the lines of a flat-spotted tyre is like a 50p piece, and after Quali they are allowed to trim the corners off to make it round again.

I remember that - reconditioning the tyres, effectively. I'm pretty sure that's allowed.

Glad it's not just me that remembered it - whether it's still allowed or not is another thing.

Where's Skeeter with his rule book? :D

The tyres aren't kept on the car until the start. They use an old set for the laps to the grid and, without checking, I assume the teams are allowed to prepare the tyres as they for any session on safety grounds.

I saw a picture a few days ago of how they remove the debris from used tyres - basically a razor with a heat gun, which peels the rubber and debris from the surface.

Yeah safety car line is mental here, can imagine Rosberg is going to have a difficult afternoon!

You either gun it early and get slipstreamed down the long straight or you back the pack up till right on the line and cause total carnage in behind.

Apart from this being a street race this track is nothing like Monaco! Most of it is like a Motorway. If you're quicker overtaking down the straight will be a doddle.

This race is going to have a lot more chaos than Monaco as well.

I'm wondering if the likes of Williams/Ferrari/Force India/Redbull have set their gearing for a potential higher speed 7th gear for that long straight, relying on DRS combined with slipstream? Mercs were probably set up to rely on redlining 7th under their own steam, as they should have been at the front.

Got a bad feeling about the start, I think there will be carnage.
