EV Car tax question.

the halcyon days of bev ownership are over - those zero rate petrols&eco diesels are paying through the fuel tax, and the £190 introduces some equivalence for economies of home charging.

yes I'd like a road tax of less than £300 on my >200g car because post-covid I'm doing less than 5K miles a year (so same emissions than a 100g car over 10K) but life isn't fair.

Welcome to get real world of unfairness

The difference with EVs though is you can't DIY/bodge it yourself to get it running again. If it's dead you need to fork out loads to get someone qualified to fix it. If it's a battery fault, it's scrap.

For old ICE cars you can often pick up used engines for a few £100.

EVs are technically modular and should be easy to repair, but in reality it's not financially viable and manufacturers don't put them together in an accessible way.
The idea you have the ability to change an engines amuses me massively.

Because of the much heavier weight, EV's can often cause more damage to roads than a small petrol or diesel vehicles. So it's about time they started to pay the road fund licence to contribute to road upkeep.
You are in such a weird rabbit hole. You think EVs need to be taxed because of pot holes?

true but isn't it going to ... £20 or something. still way less than what a far less polluting EV would cost. which would be fine were it not for the big song and dance the government claim about wanting cleaner cars.
That would be normal government confused action.

why are EVs having their tax added to older cars when ice cars are not?
Politics will play a part and the optics of that decision. Just imagine it.

"Hard working individuals running older diesel vehicles in a cost of living crisis are having their VED increased by 400%"

Whereas, like it or not, the majority of people aren't going to give two hoots if someone in a £40k+ EV has to start paying road tax. In fact, read the comments section on any BBC news article about EVs and I'd wager that the bulk of the population would actively encourage it.

perhaps.... but just to be clear it isn't 40k + EVs.(infact lux tax isn't being retrospectively added). but a £14k 2018 Hyundai ionic IS. so it's not just the wealthy 10% being stung.

I was talking in general terms. The point being that a lot of people see EVs as being an expensive thing for well off people.

Unlike the expensive ICE cars for well off people?
Which are already subject to VED.
I don't disagree with you but that is a perception problem which really needs to change
It will over time but right now there isn't too much support for EVs in the general public.

Even out of the 5 people I know well IRL who own EVs 3 have them because they can offset them against their business (and wouldn't have one otherwise), one swears never to buy one again (because of public charging) and one bought a brand new Tesla with his own cash and loves it.

It's easy to inadvertently live in a bubble but there is a lot of work to do to ensure people keep opting for EVs once they have to pay company car tax on them and 'no brainer' salary sacrifice schemes become less attractive.

Or maybe there isn't, 2030, net zero (choice) and all that.

Edit - forgot a family member with and MG ZS. Make that 4 who offset against a business and wouldn't have them otherwise.

What are the reasons for them not getting an EV then?

back to the original topic incase anyone is interested in minimising their tax next year.

this morning my renewal date has updated to march 2025 so fingers crossed I will get an extra 11 months
of course it's possible the government will update something and pro rata next year's renewal but if so there is nowt I can do about that.
it's worth a try at least for free

Mainly financial. Without the incentive of offsetting against the business they would be better off with an ICE vehicle.

Let's be honest, that is the reason that most people are getting them new right now. Incentives, whether that be BIK or write down. Very few people are taking the plunge without those factors.

Just be glad they don't start charging us for a 4 week month thereby getting 13 months out of us

So none of the usual things that people go on about?
Are they OK with the cars otherwise?

we did. and financially it has cost us dearly... but I still think it is the right thing to do for those who can afford it and who can charge themselves regardless of the fact I could have bought a performance ice car at a fraction of the price.

What price to you pay for the EV and what would have been the price of an equivalent ICE car?
