EV Car tax question.

Do you think this has got something to do with Tesla's being heavier than normal cars?
Three times this has happened to my drummer in less that 12 months with potholes.

that damage? sorry to say it but my money is on a combination of our crap roads and him driving too fast. they also look like fairly low profile tyres too.

my ipace is heavier still (damn you for making me tempt fate) i have even hit a couple of pot holes, but no damage to my alloys.... so for him to do it 3 times......... i have plenty of mates with teslas and no bent wheels mentioned to me yet,

Heavier?

Nah just this is what you get when not #legacyauto.

Have to take both sides of the coin; cant have Whoopie cushions and Durability & Robustness!

lol dont remind me, i like to bury my head in the sand on that and pretend its not happening................ besides its only an issue if you come to sell it. (classic man maths ;) )
:D exactly. I do remember a guy I worked with ages ago. He had a relatively tidy car, top spec. drove a few thousand miles a year. His road tax went up a few quid, had an advisory on an MOT and got sweet talked by a salesman at the dealership. He was beaming when he showed up in his brand new, much lower spec but otherwise almost identical car. "Best thing about it... TWENTY POUND road tax" then gave that look of 'yeah, that's right, I know I'm a smart one...'. Cost to change? About eight grand

Who here thinks we should start paying Road Tax again so that the money actually goes to the upkeep of the roads?

as in all vehicle tax was fed back into road and transport infrastructure (so that would include EV charging and maybe even public transport?)

aside from the problem of it all being privatised, in principle i would be ok with that.
Sorry sir we have ran out of bandages because we ring fenced road tax. So enjoy your gold plated road but tougho lucko on living :D

I realise you put the smiley in so assume you are at least partly joking.......... However if it were true that that was really the state this country is in, that we have to choose between roads which are so bad they damage vehicles and not having a workable public transport service OR not being able to have functioning health care.................. then that would be absolute proof that this current government have ruined this country so badly over the last 13 years that they should be kicked out right now for gross incompetence.

now seriously, whilst i do think they have done a god awful job, i dont think things are that bad yet.

Is the bar really so low that aspiring to have good roads, good hospitals and schools which dont fall down is some sort of pie in the sky thinking? (actually maybe it is!)

Yes thats literally what Government do when they have to cut taxes to appeal to the voters.

Did you need a post on a forum to tell you that its a fine balancing act already? Theres always a glut of damage after flood particuarly when there been a freeze shortly after coupled with people's reluntance to slow down or drive around larger puddles and instead hydrualic the road suface into gravel. Generally the UK roads are very good, and if not you get cars with bigger sidewalls but it seems everyone seems to think SUVs are pointless when the larger family of tyres (ie more sidewall height) is a pretty key benefit they offer.

This is exactly what the government do - there are finite resources and they get deployed from a central pot based on "need".

I dont know where you live but the roads around me are not temporarily in a state after a flood or frost (although i agree in part that is the cause of them) ........... the road around our house had been riddled with potholes for years, and is only getting worse. when they come to repair it they fix a couple - sometimes not even the worst but they were the ones on their list so that is what is done.

but no i do not need to post on a forum to tell me its a fine balancing act!. i literally just replied to a comment asking if i would hypothetically be ok with car tax going to roads... and hypothetically i would - even if that meant increasing taxes elsewhere.... possibly on the people who manage to pay less tax than I despite earning far more, but if i had to pay more as well so be it, on the condition it was done fairly.

This post is much more fun when you scroll past on your phone and mentally merge the two images into one :p

Some ding dong specified the larger wheels with rubber band tyres on my Leon. They do look marginally nicer but the ride is shocking.

Give me smaller rims and chunky sidewalls anyday!

corollary - maybe the ved rate should have a supplement for those with big rims (& little brains) - the road surface is damaged more by them -
yes the dumper trucks on our local roads are the principal protagonist, but action and reaction are equal and opposite
let me know if you need a translation tom_e

Naa, people still think it's labours fault:cry:. I've got the same wheels as the guy above, and I must look like a drunkard on some roads trying to avoid the potholes. Ice reported a fair few and normally they get filled in pretty quick.

The scary thing is.... that pothole is pretty much an "average" one around my neck of the woods. For sure the worse ones do tend to get fixed eventually, but even that one was a gnats ...... whisker off damaging the rim of the wheel with the low profile tyre.
Yes i know some will say "well dont have low profile tyres then" just like some people will laugh at those with lower cars being grounded on speed bumps, but the thing is, if a car can pass an MOT then it means it is fit for our roads, and it is an offence to have a car which is dangerous on the road. (segue - but hey this was a thread on car tax so.......) but my parents had a deposit on a mazda 3 a good few years ago now (great car) but they had to pull out after they saw (and heard) a similar one to the one they were getting getting grounded on some speedbumps near their home despite not going fast over them..... Yes their model was one of the slightly more sporty trims (i cant remember exactly) but we are not talking a maclaren super car here with only a few cm clearence.

My point is.......... The roads should be suitable for any car capable of passing an MOT - esp if factory spec.. and i would say it is not the case at the moment esp in some post code lottery areas.

(talking of speedbumps - around us at least it is often the areas around a speedbump which is even worse and it can often make it a proper slalom course when you are driving around speedbumps AND potholes. IF the council / who ever they employ are incapable of installing a speedbump without weakening the structure of the road which then leads to potholes then i would ask, should they be doing it?.
