EV general discussion

Not sure if this is an electric car question, or a general house and home one.

Would I be mental to not have a 22kw charger installed for future proofing, given I'm fortunate enough to have a 3 phase supply at my property?

There would be more work involved, and it wouldn't be as clean of an install due to location but it seems a worthwhile investment given the way cars are going.

Can the car do 22kw and do you need more than 7kw I guess. Questions to ask. Probably not worth it now as if anything you want to be future proof for V2G too

You're mental to spank a grand on an electronic device that lives outdoors if you don't need it. It's like replacing a boiler early.

If you are doing electrical work and you have electricians on site working in the same area as where the car charger would go and it makes sense to run the cable at the same time then yes it may be worth running a cable but do not buy a charger to put onto the end of it.

Chargers are an ever moving target and what is the best today may not be the best tomorrow.

If this is a standalone job, then no.

A friend of mine has done exactly this, running power and data to where a charger will be in the process of building his driveway but as he has no EV yet so has not bothered with the rest.

Even if two seater sports cars come along they hold zero interest to me, they have no soul, no vibrations and sounds from engine, no RPM's and limiter to approach, no gears to change it is all just a bit boring, as for me faster has never really meant better, so much more to a fun car than just acceleration.
It’s not a 2 seater but the Hyundai 5N has those things you mentioned.
- Engine sound
- RPM’s
- Bounce off the limiter
- Gears to change - manual or auto

Boring it isn’t - it’s many petrolheads car of the year.

Only a matter of time before this reaches other EV’s

Example

RIP European car manufacturing
£16k in China never equals £16k in Europe though. European taxes and Chinese incentives make that impossible.

We still apply a 10% tariff to non-EU imported cars also.

For example, the Dolphin is way more expensive over here than it is over there and BYD have not made much of a dent in that market yet. The only Chinese brand that has is MG but that’s largely down to it being an already established ‘British’ brand.

I actually don't miss the sound of a engine but I have never owned anything with a big engine. My previous car was the most powerful I have had before switching to a EV and thaat was only a 125hp Ford B-Max!! Putting fake engine sounds into a EV is just ridiculous though.

On a side note, Did anyone have any problems with their OHME Home Pro chargers last night? I plugged my Leaf in around 19.00 and it worked out the schedule fine. I came down this morning to find the charger offline and the car only charged to 72%. I had to power cycle the charger as per their online instructions and it was online again. I plugged the car back in again and it worked out the schedule (got morning slots for the first time in ages) and left it. Twenty minutes later and I get a notification on the phone, I open it to find a message that the charger can't connect to the car and it was working on the assumption that the battery state was 0% so I stopped the charge which was at 82% (set to 80%) anyway. Going to do a 60 odd mile round trip tomorrow so I will see if it plays ball when I plug it in after that. I still have the granny charger as back up so it's not as if I won't be able to charge the car, it's just sooo slow.

Isn't that like me going on stage with my band and every time we finish a song I press a button with a pretend crowd on :)

Trying to talk Gibbo out of an ICE car is like talking me out of ham & cheese oatcakes and giving me a vegan alternative.

Depends if you believe all engine noises are real engine generated sounds in the first place..... /shrug :)

similarly - I will get the cable pushed through with a 32A commando socket and PEN junction box to support likes of an ohme GO(or v2g) down the line -
neighbours and I geting quotes for a bulk install to remote/50m garages in a row adjacent to 3 terrace.

Completely agree with you here, the Chinese are making some very good EVs and are only getting better.

They’ve put a huge portion of their economy and manufacturing into it. It’s gotten to the point where they not only make things quicker and cheaper than us, but better too. It’s a smart move too. We can’t come close to competing. It’s time to welcome our eastern overlords.
