EV general discussion

ive had a Renault 5e delivered just before christmas, enjoying the car, only getting 3.3ish kwhpm but think thats the cold weather. i am charging it free at work so not really fussed.

really like the styling, got it in black, could not stomach the default green. im leasing it so had to pay extra though.
I think yellow looks great every time I see one. 3.3 isn't bad for middle of winter!

I drove to Paris last week via the tunnel, I didn’t do any planning and left it to the sat nav once I got in the car.

TLDR - it was fine.

The car decided we were doing the A16 on the way there and the A1 route on the way back.

I left home with 100% and got to the tunnel with about 60%.

There are chargers at tunnel but the layout is awful if they are at capacity and they were. I got on one of the Tesla units after waiting for about 10 mins but it wasn’t helped by one of the Engie units being down and a Porcshe Tycan being plugged into one of the Tesla units and taking up 2 chargers to seemingly save 7p/kwh.

The trains are all delayed by 30 mins so I wasn’t going anywhere fast and probably explains why so many were hanging around and charging up to 100% on the Engie units.

Tesla has implemented a new congestion charge across its network. If the site is at >50% capacity, they charge 50p/min if you are at >80% charge - expensive but at least it meant the Tesla units were turning over quickly.

We were coming back on new years day when the cerefour would be closed so we topped off while doing the obligatory shop for beer you can’t easily get in the U.K.

Stopped for a quick charge at an Auchan in Beauvais. The car picked this but I needed to pee anyway.

The hotel had some shell recharge AC units but they didn’t work with my UK shell recharge card. I’m not sure if that was a regional issue or if my card hadn’t migrated to the new app properly.

Either way I binned that off and did a quick top up at the Tesla chargers round the corner as we were leaving.

The car added in a stop at Roye about half way to Calais. There is a big hub developing there, it is through the toll booths but there are 32 Tesla units, 8 Ionity units and 10 electra units all within spitting distance. Plenty of food and facilities to choose from. The Tesla lounge had a Nintendo switch but Mrs Sk8 didn’t rate the cleanliness of the loos.

We did just added enough here to add just enough to get to the tunnel.

Got to the tunnel with <10%, added enough to get home while waiting for the train and doing my tax refund.

Rolled into home with about 5%.

Public charging cost was £65.50 plus £5.30 for ~75kwh at home for about 720 miles round trip. Not bad.

Well that's a stinker...
.... don't worry they get worse!

This is excellent, the others should follow suit.

Good write up, that would've cost me 5x in fuel.

I stopped at off motorway sites but on the French auto routes, the services areas with chargers (and fuel) are all signposted well in advance.

Those same sign posts also tell you how many KM down the road the next services is with fuel and chargers is.

The U.K. could learn a thing or two about that.

I wouldn't necessarily say any EV is that engaging in my opinion. The P2 PP is less frenetic than a Tesla Model 3 Performance but the ride quality with the adjustable Ohlins is staggeringly good to me! Complaint and planted. The lethargic throttle map probably lends itself to a more laid back drive.

I don't have many EV to compare against but did have a i5 touring and iX1 for a day each and can't say I was smitten with either of those. I was looking at a i4 M50 at that time which the dealerships down here were clearly not interested in selling cars. Was a struggle to buy a car from them.

I do like the fact Polestar/Volvo are allowing you to upgrade your IHU to the newest snapdragon though...

I'm a little wary replying to this as I can't be sure how much my experience translates to the specific model in question, but I'd say chassis compliance and performance was not a problem, steering/handling is decent, but when threading through bends on an open road the braking and throttle response just wasn't satisfying - something which can probably be tweaked somewhat in software but I think part of the lack of engagement is the missing sensation from an engine (which would be a wider criticism) when you get back on the power coming through or out of a bend - and personally simulated noise and transmission effects do nothing for me there. I really like the styling of the Polestar 2 - I find the style of so many new vehicles especially EVs hateful but externally in grey I think it looks great and the interior mostly works for me aside I'm not a big fan of the Volvo style big vertical screen and too many controls placed into the infotainment system rather than physical buttons which is a shame as otherwise it is decently driver focussed.

On the other hand I've seen videos of people pushing the Ioniq 5n which look a lot of fun but without experiencing it myself I can't say how the engagement would work for me.

To be fair, looking at the top contributors in this thread, it’s very much from owners or people who have gone on to buy one.

Of the first page, it’s only jpaul (1845 posts…
), Masher (mostly trolling), [TW]Fox and Roff who don’t.

I have like a 10th of the number of posts of the top contributors!

Despite what some think I'm not anti-EV and while I don't own one, due to having what are probably less than usual needs, I have various experiences with them (as I've put up a couple of pictures to kind of show), I am very aware how much they are not for everyone however partially due to living in an area of the country which is less ideal than some areas for it and also due to being very scathing about the situation where this country is too dysfunctional to invest in the infrastructure network first to encourage uptake and instead leaves it to demand to force infrastructure rollout.

Speaking of controversial/marmite cars - I really like the looks of the DS No8 (other than the light grill) - no idea why - just seems to be quite different to all the other vehicles in that size, back end from the side profile reminds me of the older Citroëns - no clue if it is actually any good as a car though.

My i5 range is tanking in this cold snowy weather around 160 mikes now on a %90 charge. Snow mode and 4wd works pretty well though until the tyres are bunged with snow anyway. Managed my usual drive without too many dramas other than going a fair bit slower.

The Corsa is awful in the snow it’s like it has no idea what’s going on as soon as it slips it cuts the power. Turning off T/C is pointless as it re-enables it as soon as it detects slip.

Only EV issue is bonnet ice it does not melt so the bonnet remains frozen all day or slowly breaks off when driving. Oh and the Screenwash is permanently frozen even with neat Jennys fluid rated to -10c… lol

What do we think of the Polo ID with retro display. I used to have mk2 GTI so ticks all the buttons for me.

I wasn't sure when i first saw it but thinking about it more i really like it.

While the display on my Ioniq is ok it is a bit of a cluttered mess and i'm sure it's going to date absolutely terribly so the ability to just have some classy classic looking dials would be really good.

Yeah, i'm down to 180 miles on a full charge on my i5. On a more positive note, whinging like mad to Ohme and my fleet lease company finally means someone is coming out to repair my home charger after 4 weeks without.

May have missed this but has anyone looked at the solid state battery which has been “announced”

I say announced, because it feels like an AMD/Nvidia announcement, but it’s from a company who are already established at producing electric motors.

Toyota have been talking about solid state batteries for an absolute age, still no sign of it actually being developed and used outside of labs.
