EV general discussion

Wow, why are these EVs so expensive to insure lol - is it the high power?

Ours (ID Buzz, Cupra Born) are around £350 each in a low risk area, and they both only have 200hp

EV6 GT is group 50E I presume the E is Electric. It is 600+ HP so that and they are stolen a fair bit and parts are hard to get all add up the insurance.

I presume the E is Electric.

There are 6 different letters that are used to classify a car’s safety level, and they are as follows:

E = Exceeds the security requirement for a car of this type and the group rating has been reduced – so a group 10 car that exceeds the standard is listed as a 9E.

A = Acceptable security requirements for the car’s group.

P = Provisional – incomplete data when the model was launched.

D = Doesn’t meet the security requirement for a car of this type and the group rating has been increased as a result – so a group 8 car that doesn’t meet the standard is listed as a 9D.

U = Unacceptable – the level of security is significantly below requirements. The car won’t be uninsurable, but some insurers may insist on a security upgrade before they cover you.

G = Import – Insurance Group Ratings and security ratings are currently only allocated to vehicles built for the UK market.

My i4 is no more expensive to insure than my M235i was, both under £400 a year.

ID 7 was £750 so guessing it must just be power.

Ioniq 6 was also about £1800 per year. Still cheaper than paying fuel.

That's crazy, as our Ioniq 6 quote for the AWD Ultimate was well under £500.

Which is why insurance needs regulation imo. It's like a random number generator sometimes. Changing my address to a nice part of town, couple mins walk, with off street parking (was previously on street) added £100 for seemingly no reason

I had a really weird one with my current insurer on the 435i

Added my dad: increase of £100 or so

Changed address to current place: £100 or so

Doing both: decreased by £30

Makes no sense :P

Insurance is a mad one I can't work it out

£207 for my 280bhp 600e Competizione, cheaper than my 113bhp Up GTi @ £330 ( ~1100 once my daughter 18 took it over) , but not as cheap as my old 180bhp Abarth Punto SS whiich was ~160.

Guess I am just in the age sweetspot just before I start going back up the curve for being a decrepit old man :D

My Volvo xc60 is a whopping £480 though, 455bhp.

Took a Suoer N for a joy ride today:

95BHP and 1100kg for £18,950 with simulated gear shifts (paddles).

EVs are generally more expensive to repair, hence the usually higher insurance costs. Though that will change as EV adoption continues.

Weird thing about insurance. Last year getting an iX20 petrol insured for me and my wife was more expensive than getting a Cupra Born 77 eBoost insured.

I was getting quotes of £900+ for the iX20 with my mother in law as the main driver as she is 80. Took her off as an experiment and it dropped to £420. That surprised me because our existing Cupra Born eBoost cost £330 ish for us both not long before that. I think it’s because production of the iX20 stopped in 2019, so could be a parts issue.

Shame it wasn't in the default purple colour, looks awesome. How did it handle?

They had a purple demo too.
Seems to handle fine, the low weight and simulated gears seem to help to make the car have a more fun factor drive, also helped by compact size you can truly drive it everywhere like you stole it. Plenty of fun whilst remaining within speed limit.

Can see it been a success for them like Renault 5 is for Renault.

It’s star highlights are its compact size and lack of weight, its biggest issue will be its a range but it’s a city car and cheap so can’t see it been an issue.

I love that thing, and what it is, it I hadn't had got that cheapo lease on the Abarth 600e, I might have popped for one of these for our little city car, alongside our up Gti there'd be loads of space on the drive. Front charge port is perfect for us.
