EV general discussion

I don’t disagree but have you seen some of the CAZ’s in Europe? They make London’s ULEZ look mild.

In France there is no pay £12.50/day, if it doesn’t meet the criteria in that area it is just banned from entering. All diesels will be band from central Paris from next year regardless of age.

Every car has to display a sticker with your emissions category (even BEVs) which you have to pay for before you can enter. It’s almost like ANPR doesn’t exist!

So today I drop my Polestar off for a service and MOT at a Volvo dealer and they give me a fuel powered XC40 as a courtesy car. Not so bad I thought, until after I started my journey I noticed the fuel was empty and I had 0 miles range

Cue range anxiety for the next 15 minutes whilst I try and find a fuel station

First time I’ve experienced range anxiety.. ever, and also the first time I’ve visited a fuel station in 3 years - those are hateful places ! :p

Looks like we are loosing the $7.1k EV subsidy at the end of the year, and the xpower wont be here by then. So just going to stay with our Essence 64 order, which we get next month.

Nice service from the main dealer there

Still, worst case you can carry 30 miles of range in a little plastic tub with an ICE ;)

my wife always used to have a can of petrol in the boot of her car.....
its funny, all the press about evs catching fire esp in accidents, does not especially worry me................ but carrying round a can of fuel in the boot of my car was never something i would have been happy doing (i - possibly incorrectly - assumed a petrol tank was made of tougher stuff than a plastic fuel can.)

caught my eye, on video title looked like front of an bmw X3/5 , apparently now got a 20kw/h phev battery on board,
so up there with the new C class phev's and compatible with newer eu/german tax break for phev's with 60km electric autonomy,
not sure if they are doing that bigger battery for all the bigger skodas/vw's.
interior looks high quality appointed with pastel shades, you get on 'premium' cars.

Has anyone noticed crazy insurance quotes for EVs in the UK. My Model Y renewal went from 1200 to 2400, with the cheapest quote online is around 4000? This is with no issues/claims/points, 15 years NCB. Meanwhile in Dubai it cost a couple hundred to insure fully comp a RR Wraith...

Yeah but you save money on fuel.......

Insurance is all about risk. It is isn't hard to see why EV's are more expensive to insure.

It is a problem, especially with Teslas as they are so hard to repair. But all cars and EVs are seeing higher insurance at the moment. Try having a Range Rover in some parts of the country...

Not sure comparing to Dubai is really relevant to be fair though

perhaps but has the risk changed 2 - 4 fold in the last 12 months? I doubt it!.

I do know a load of anti ev folks are loving it however........... "see i told you EVs were dangerous, and now the price to insure them proves it!"

Some of the cost must relate to lack of skills in the work force meaning higher costs. I mean anyone with a spanner/socket set can work easily on an ICE car without too much worry. However moving to a BEV/hybrid does require some training and specialist equipment, and I guess those with the skills are reaping the benefits now with less competition to have to price yourself against.

Ironically some of the biggest naysayers of BEV's are mechanics (I know a good few) and they could actually be making money if they upskilled, but they'd rather stick their fingers in their ears, close their eyes and pretend they don't exist.

Always the same with new tech right.
If your lucky a local expert will crop up and you can avoid main dealer/manufacturer premiums.

If not your forced to pay the main dealer/manufacturer premium.

Over time of course the whole outside the official channels business gets enough demand to support one man bands and small businesses.

The reverse will happen to ICE over time. The whole support network will hit a point where decline starts to hurt. Parts manufacturers, garages etc.
There will come a point when no one will train to maintain ICE. At that point the people able to do so will slowly decline as they retire etc.

Shh it's only ev with lengthy garage repair times. :D

Eventually conversations will be a lot cheaper. Then we can have cars from the golden era (90s-mid 00s of course) modded to EVs.

That's not for a repair, that's just to be booked into a particular dealers to be looked at. Are EV owners seen instantly as soon as they ring up then?

No, this is about the fact ALL warranty repairs are taking weeks just to be seen. My I-Pace has a 10 week wait but I can call Jaguar Assist if it is an emergency. I would deem anything where the car cannot be driven as an emergency.

my car needs to in for its 1st MOT in a few months along with an end of warranty check... i do wonder what happens if i cant get it booked in with them................... can i take it elsewhere? if there is an issue do they have to expand your warranty? (it would be quite the loophole if they could just string people along not giving them an appointment until after the warranty had run out, before then saying "sorry sir your warranty has expired, why did you not book it in before it ran out".

Have you booked it already? My I-Pace is a lease and is coming up to a two year service in May. I will be booking many months in advance for the service.
