EV general discussion

After a comparatively short 6 months but with some frustrating delays our iPace arrived this week.

Only driven about 40 miles myself but first impressions are that it’s great. I managed to pick up an HSE Black through my employers salary sacrifice scheme for a net £450 p/m (inclusive of everything) which was very similar to an iX3, ev6 etc.

Build quality and reliability might prove to be its undoing but it’s very comfortable, quick, quiet and generally feels ‘right’. Some cars I need some time to adapt to but not this time.

In other news the MG4 seems to be getting great reviews. The proposed 400hp AWD version could be interesting for all those who claim an EV hot hatch is what they are waiting on
 
That's a banging deal. Just checked and it's 850 a month net for me for the HSE!

Polestar2 Long Range looking good value. As is the Q4 Etron.
 
Oh yes he did. Well that’s mega cheap so unless he’s cheating and in the ‘60% tax’ bracket. how many years and miles /yr?

I walked past an MG the other day in Sancerre. It looked really nice, and the interior must have been the top end one as it was all leather dash etc..
 
At the rate prices are going I don't see an eV in my life in the next 5 years. If anything eV ownership is further away for me.

I will not get a car on finance, but older eVs are kind of not good buys.

rwd & 1600kg , 1500mm height for £26K does seem good though.

after reading about USA inflation reduction tax impact on chinese imports(going further than eu) - how much longer will uk accept them, if we want a trade agreement with usa.

The Inflation Reduction Act conditions the two-part credits on a certain percentage of materials used in a vehicle’s batteries being extracted, processed, manufactured and/or assembled in the US or in certain US-allied countries.

  • To qualify for the first $3,750 credit, a percentage of the value of applicable critical minerals contained in a vehicle’s batteries must be extracted or processed in the US or in a country with which the US has a free trade agreement or must have been recycled in North America. Applicable percentages increase from 40 percent prior to 2024, to 80 percent after 2026. Qualifying critical minerals include aluminum, cobalt, lithium, nickel, and graphite, among others.
  • To qualify for the second $3,750 credit, a certain percentage of the value of the battery components in an EV must be manufactured or assembled in North America; applicable percentages increase from 50 percent prior to 2024 to 100 percent after 2028.
  • Further, after calendar year 2024, a clean vehicle will not qualify for the tax credit if it contains any critical minerals that were “extracted, processed, or recycled by a foreign entity of concern” – including companies owned by, controlled by or subject to the jurisdiction of the government of the People’s Republic of China.
  • After December 31, 2023, a vehicle may not qualify for the credit if any “components” contained in its battery are “manufactured or assembled by a foreign entity of concern”.

Was never my intent to compare an I Pace to an MG4 lol

Just didn’t want to make 2 separate posts.

The MG4 is an interesting car in its segment which is ID3, Born, Megane E all of which start at £36k vs MG4 £26k. Wife wants the Cupra Born though :rolleyes:
 
I had a theft alert on my car yesterday as i left the window open and hence the app didnt track the journey for me... which was a bit of a shame as i did a 4hr 30min constant journy to drop my sister at Bristol Airport and home, fortunatley I 99% the car at work (I dont seem to be able to get to 100% on the DC 25kW chargers) so a 9 mile journey to meet here and then this at normal speed, rain at the start, motorway cruise high around 73-77mph and some congestion sections etc.
Great when you get the car up to temp etc in these conditions, trip there was sat 355Wh/mile so the return was even more efficient to get that average - included some education events too but missed a chance to go toe to toe on a model 3 as the 50mph section ended. I could see he was using autopilot so made sure I was out of his way as ahead the lane split from 3 to 4 so i knew was going to happen with me sat in lane 2; the dividing line was directly centre to land 3 and hence the car.... massive swerve left towards where i was and then the intervention from him in my mirror so I left him to it as he then shot off to the new speed limit away from the drivers thinking WTF :cry:

A little bit, I’m in the 58.5% tax bracket because of the child benefit charge. A little bit of man maths never hurt anyone!

A 4 yr lease, 8k per annum - lack of warranty not relevant in this context.

The I-Pace gets panned for efficiency and charging but it really isn't horrible with some of the improvements JLR have made. I am getting a real 260 miles of range on mixed roads with similar efficency to yours. Motorway miles is about 230ish miles but motorways don't exist in a bubble. I get that other cars are more efficient and charge faster but as an all round package the I-Pace is hard to beat. I have priced up how much it costs to run an I-Pace vs a Model Y over 10,000 milesa PA. It worked out the I-Pace costs me about £123 more per year to charge. But the Model Y lease would have been £75 per month more expensive to lease.

Decent range with 250 - 270 a realistic summer range (mixed roads).
Great performance
Great handling
Looks great.
Decent practicality
Very luxurious and well built

If all you do are long range motorway trips then topping out at 110kWh on such a big battery will take about 45 minutes (or more) from 10% to 80%. But only a few times per year I have to wait an extra ~15 minutes to charge, then that is a sacrifice I am willing to take.
 
Really fair summary there. Thanks.

I still think in many years the lack of abuse from charging will pay dividends to maintaining performance, which the IPACE does well already by giving consistent power output across a broad scope of SoC.

Going to Disneyland Paris in it next week :eek:

There is no such thing as road tax, just saying. :)

If you mean vehicle excise duty then a £150 annual tax isn't an incentive to buy an EV. It's literally the smallest running cost you could pick for all motor vehicles. Any additional taxation will almost certainly apply to ICE vehicles as well to artificially keep up the incentive to buy an EV.
