EV general discussion

when i was looking at EVs this was my beef with the pre-refresh polestar 2 as well, the battery/motor setup was terribly inefficient compared to the model 3
i believe the refresh polestar 2 is on par with the model 3, but i did not want to spend that much

This is a 2025 which has the same motor/battery as the snapdragon refresh I'm lead to believe. The 82kwh battery. The Tesla I had for 1 long journey showed better battery range but am lead to believe they were rather optimistic.

The 4 is too big for UK roads IMO.

The 2 does have a cramped drivers cabin but it's only really a problem if you are trying to eat food from a drive-thru.

The first thing most people say about my 2 is how big it is. I saw a 4 driving down the road in Cornwall once and it's far too large.

I'm 6'3" on a good day and leggy. Whilst it's cramped compared to a Tesla which is nice and airy, the seating position has been great for me and it feels like you're sitting in the car with how the dash, centre console and door "cocoons" you.

Whats your heating set at?

20*C Eco with heated steering wheel/seat on the lowest. I have in the last week turned off Eco as the windows were misting up and not noticed too much of a difference in range or kW use. This variant has the heat pump.

yours is definitely the refresh model, as can be seen by the change in the front grille.
tbh i just use the battery% on my tesla. i know i get 4 miles/kwh and each battery % is approx 700wh = 3 miles
so for example 67% = 200 miles

On the topic of Polestar, I'm now weighing up a 4 vs the Model 3. The Model Y deals have worsened so that's off the table now and I don't need the space anyway.

From what I can gather it's a classier, more premium car than the Model 3, but it suffers from two main issues:

- The software is hit and miss, it's improving over time but a lot of people are still having problems.

- People are reporting it often struggles to pull a good charging speed at public chargers? This is more of a worry for me as I'd be using them a fair bit. Software niggles I can deal with.

Both of these are things that Tesla get pretty much spot on, annoyingly.

Not sure the PS4 and the Model 3 cross shop? The PS4 is bigger and more akin to a model Y (the Y is ~9cm shorter still).

In any case the PS4 should out charge Tesla at a rapid charger.

I’ve not seen how the new battery in the AWD/P Model Y* performs but Tesla’s don’t actually charge that fast by modern standards. The 250kw peak only last for a few seconds and it drops off very quickly as the SOC rises. They make up for it a bit with efficiency but that advantage is also closing.

*I don’t think the 3 has it yet.

I have no real logic when it comes to that, I've considered everything from a Model 3 to an i7. The Model 3 seems to stand out in terms of value, and the Polestar 4 I think looks the best inside and out.

There are a lot of used PS4's for sale for £35-38k which is a very attractive price (from Polestar directly, very low miles too).

tesla used to be the EV leader, the pack is catching up and no doubt will be surpassing tesla in the not too distant future.
they've taken their eye of the ball :(

They'll need to do something as European sales are being cannibalised by Chinese EVs

I purchased directly from Polestar because you could filter the bits you want easily and they're competitively priced. Mine seems to have a service plan on it also which I didn't purchase and with a rejection previously with a Tesla from a third party I wasn't risking it this time. Since I bought the P2 the P4 has come into the same realms....that's within 6 months which is mad! Would love to give one a go as I like the look of them.

Very much enjoyed the follow up video Jonny Smith did with Cleevley on his 275k mile (£5000) Tesla Model S P90D. Covers the maintenance and repair costs, and his opinions on owning it for a good while.

Good to see a petrol head enjoying free super charging.

Interesting to see the clevely labour rates, even if he'd payed regular £120 (ffwd'd to )
versus reduced 60, bills wouldn't have been enormous -- could he have done ioniq fluid change.

ps4 insurance cost is competitive ? ... since charging rate is imperative , guess you ruled out i4 at that price point.

Of course he could. What are you on about.

Why not get some insurance quotes. It’s not like you listen to posters anyway. Often countering what people say with google links

JPaul lives in Cambridge doesn't he? insurance should not be a blocker for getting a nice EV (unless a high risk driver for some reason) . I always found insurance in and around Cambridge to be very fair (put it this way I wouldn't insure me with my money on the cars I drove for the price I paid ;) )

I don’t even think he’s interested in either. Last I saw he was planning on test driving a Tesla.
