ever feel like a sucker?

Some of us have a natural position of having "the best" when it comes to gaming rigs but dont it ever make you feel a sucker?. I am no exception to this I must have the best tech, after upgrading to DDR5 mobo, ram and ordering 13th gen i9 then comes the RTX 4090 arriving, just as you install it a thought pops into your head you just know it wont be long before the 4090Ti comes forth to ruin our day but you must keep upgrading like a compulsion.
No offence intended to anyone that has bought a 4090, but personally I would genuinely be embarrassed to say that I had bought one. I was like this with the 2000 series also and I wouldn't even buy one of them second hand.

Like a lot of people I'm totally nonplussed about upgrading now; if I see something I think offers value then I'll still go for it like I did with the 6800XT at £650 but I could quite easily hold on to my current hardware for literally years.

Just LOL if you don't already have the best of everything and your buying compulsions have no obvious exits and your reward structure is fractured and broken and while this sounds like a cautionary tale, it absolutely is.

noobs.

Material possessions will never bring genuine lasting happiness.

If you are always chasing the bleeding edge, then these companies will make you bleed. A 3090Ti was 2k a few months ago, now it’s worth a grand or less.

The 4090 is epic - why not try keeping it for three or four years and then upgrade instead of every year…

Yes, which is why I'm re-evaluating my 'need' for such expensive hardware. Also, we are mostly getting console ports with slightly better graphics anyway, so I'm not sure it's worth spending so much on a 4090 for that even if you can easily afford it (but not to the point of it being a trivial amount of money).

Not really. I feel like I've made fairly sensible purchases over the years, never pushed beyond what I have needed, kept components through a long period of time and only upgraded when required. I don't feel the need to buy the biggest and best every time it comes out.

Just thinking of upgrading my ryzen 1700 to something with a 5 in front that fits my motherboard. Then I may upgrade my 470 graphics card as well after Christmas. I used to do it every three years at most but since I retired, it has gone to more that five.
But hardware runs software much better today. At one time you has to upgrade to keep up with changes like 32 bit windows then 64 bit processing generally. More and better ram etc.

Not pc hardware but I'm typing from a new phone, 1st upgrade in 4 years and honestly the difference is very underwhelming.
Speak about buyers remorse lol.

I have a 9700k and 2080 which probably won't be ever getting upgraded at this rate. There prices are insane and my gaming interest wanes monthly....

Sad times :p 1st world problems

What MB/CPU/RAM are you looking at? I’m in the same boat and I think I need a new PSU as well as it must be at least 7-8 years old.

CPU will be the 13900K. I really want that 5.8Ghz boost clock, as a lot of games I play are modded/single core. For the motherboard, looking at this one.

My current MB is Gigabyte and in 11 years only the primary PCI-E failed (last year) so I'm sticking with this brand. Love the subtle RGB glow too, exactly what I'm looking for. These crazy RGB case/fan builds that make your PC look like a disco are really not my cup of tea.

Haven't looked at RAM yet, but a decent DDR5 variant that gels well with the above.

Don't know your PSU brand, but mines the Gold 650w Corsair. Their case fans are **** if my Obsidian 800D is anything to go by (all failed and the top 200mm one even spun off), but their PSUs are rock solid in my experience.

It does seem in general stuff is now so expensive people are really stopping to think about it.

Games, phones, lego, pc hardware are things for me personally that I've noticed have become very very expensive since covid.

I mean the price of those new gpus? Nearly cost of my car on ebay.
Or the cost of my amazing kayaking trip to Norway I'll remember forever.

When something costs the price of an epic holiday.. And it's a single piece of pc hardware? Yeah. That's a line I'm not crossing.
Latest phone? 50 a month for 2 years? Nope.

I dont buy many things nowadays as no point trying to keep up as there is just no satisfaction or pleasure in possessions.

I shudder to think how many thousands a month I spend on food and drink though. :/

Still running a GTX970 and 4gb ram. Runs CSGO just fine so no need to upgrade for me.
I suspect my motherboard is so old (think it’s from 2005), that I’d have to get new everything if I wanted to upgrade one component so no plan to do so.

Most of us would shudder at the thought of spending thousands on food and drink every month.

No. It's a conscious decision. I have a RTX 4090 yes, but I run it on a system that has a 11400. Because the games I run are generally not CPU-limited but I do game at 4k. So on one side I have the best but on the other I have something decent but nowhere near the best. On the mobile phone front I have a Pixel 4a, well off the latest.

It's very definitely a cost-conscious decision. I expect my 4090 to last me 4 years - I'll skip the 50 series unless there are huge improvements - so for my £1800 expenditure I will get about 200 weeks of gaming. That's about £9 a week. That's what many people spend on the lottery. And I'm assuming I don't resell it. On the technical side, 4k raster is now a solved problem, and with DLSS etc the 4090 is good enough for 4k RT for the longer term.

Now watch Nvidia or AMD or Intel bring out a product in 2 years' time that trounces the 4090! :) It's a good time to be in PC gaming if you have the funds.

I do as well as was raised differently. But it happens so easily.

Breakfast easily 10-15 CHF (coffee is 5 alone)
Lunch is always eaten out (at 40 CHF if a couple beers add whatever!).
Dinner is minimum 50 CHF, add wine etc and you can starting making it whatever price. Going out is seriously expensive. Say a few nights out a week, cocktails each around 20-30 CHF depending on location....

And that's before you invite other people out etc.

And yet I would quibble other things....

Could be worse, i dont drink, smoke or take drugs. Or gamble, go on holiday, eat out or buy expensive phones. The list goes on but i will leave it there
