ever feel like a sucker?

...

I'm playing more and more on my Series X compared to PC since i got a 4k oled TV (apart from strategy games that you can only get on PC)...

I used to be a massive PC gaming advocate as i always need a good PC (cpu and ram wise) for other needs. I used to see the cost to game on it therefore just the GPU cost and to get the 2nd to highest tier card a few years ago it would only be about ~£500. Now they want over £1000 a few years later...when you can get a series X for under £400 when ebay have their weekly codes? No, Nvidia and AMD can stick those prices where the sun don't shine.

I mainly play older strategy games, and could run most of those on the 8800gt I have in my emergency stash.

I kinda regret my 3060ti- and I got an FE, which was at least £100 cheaper than the AIB versions. I wanted a £200 new or second hand card and paid double that, due to market conditions. At current prices, I cannot justify an upgrade.

If this is the way it is going to be, I'll be forced to have a legacy gaming pc and go console.

Indeed. They are having an absolute laugh this year pricing the XX80 card at £1269. That is basically double the 3080 price.

The only sucker part about OP is that he ends up bug testing the technology as he buys it so early.

If thats what you want to spend your money on then go for it.

I personally just buy tech when I absolutely need it.

I think it goes back to my old days dealing with computers in the 1980's when gaming was more of a struggle and graphics were secondary.

@drakulton think 4 kids is a lot, ive got more ( im 37 as of today ) and got 7 kids lol people say you need a hobby mate... got one lol

I think the era these days is just to pump out as much as they can one after the other for the suckers money. Im no different, since starting this post ive spent roughly 12k on pc parts but in all honesty I have a rtx 3090ti suprim, 12th gen oc, 64ddr4, evo ssds etc set up under my main build rtx 4090 suprim, 64 ddr5, 12th gen blah blah on the same odyssey neo g9. The difference between is minimal when gaming or editing, each system running ultra / psycho settings maxed out. A few frames higher on the 4090 and temps lower but about it. I can go back to my 4770/ gtx 1080 setup in the graveyard and will still pump out a good gaming session. We get drawn in ( as hes typing this buying a new maximus extreme.... and telling himself its a self birthday gift ) they make us want it lol.

Problem is if people not into highend PC's then it just something else that costs loads of money there into or they have

E.G
My mate spends thousands every year on his boat
My sister spents a good +20k per year on holidays
My sister daughter has 2 horses plus 4 kids and 2 dogs how much do them things cost

Is the second sister single?
The last one.. Pass! :D

But yes. Spending on holidays to me isn't a waste. But each to their own. But the thing any gpus. You get so little bang for your buck past a certain point. I mean each single FPS must cost.. What.. 100-150? quid

7 kids. At 37? i can't even imagine?

The washing machine must be on 24/7

Some of us have a natural position of having "the best" when it comes to gaming rigs but dont it ever make you feel a sucker?. I am no exception to this I must have the best tech, after upgrading to DDR5 mobo, ram and ordering 13th gen i9 then comes the RTX 4090 arriving, just as you install it a thought pops into your head you just know it wont be long before the 4090Ti comes forth to ruin our day but you must keep upgrading like a compulsion.
i always said i would never be at the top of the pile for hardware. you pay max cost for minimal jumps and by the time you need that grunt or that shiny new feature set it will have come down the stack anyway.

i made an exception for my 3090FE*** as i could not get a 3080FE at the time and i DID need the performance (1080ti (that i got in a fire sale bargain from occuk after the 2080 launched) not cutting it really for my VR headset)

but even then i did it knowing i would likely pull the cost back mining. I cant do that now, and on top of that my 3090 is still pretty quick, so happy to skip next gen and hopefully drop one or maybe even 2 tiers down the stack in the 5000 generation.

a 5070 at the performance of a 4090 but hopefully around the £500 mark if the £ has stabilised seems sensible, and hopefully even possible.

***with hindsite i wish i had got my 1080ti at launch as what a good buy that would have turned out to be.... but i didnt and got it for not that much less at EOL

The Vast majority do it just to say they have it. I have played into this in the past, not necessarily the highest SKU but certainly the latest generation. I stopped when I saw people still using 5-6yr old rigs just fine.

Im keeping my 3900x/RX6800 for a few more years yet and I think when the time comes, it'll make that upgrade a little more exciting.

Haven't done gaming since tnt ultra days so dosn't apply but i tend to get slightly older tech, phone is a oppo find x2 pro so ex 1k plus at the time but I paid £300 ,still Stella camera 12 gig ram ect ect.
I am getting back into audiophile stuff but not top of the range, beyer 700 pro x and hipdac2 hi res dac/amp last month

Vega 64 + 2700X here.

I play only really play CSGO these days, the only game i'm looking forward to is STALKER 2 which obviously won't be coming for a long while yet, and when it does i'll grab a 3070 or something for less than £400/500 on MM, maybe an extra 16gb RAM and sure it will run like butter.

Hopefully the state of the economy will stop the incessant "willy waving" effect of people needing to have the latest released card/car/console/watch/bike and realise that the yearly release cycle introduced by Apple does nothing other than destroy the planet and put people further into debt they cannot afford.

Went from a 2500K & 580GTX built in 2011, to 3700X & 2080Ti in 2019, only because I bought a 4K TV and the old rig was limited to 1080p.

I'll be happy if I can stretch this rig out for half as long...

I recently went from i5 2500K to i7 8700K and still haven't upgraded my GTX970. I begrudge spending silly money on components now, even though I can technically afford it.

I think I'm losing interest in AAA gaming anyway. Might pick up a 3080 on MM if the price is right but I'm not fussed.

Only feel bad when you realize that a lot of looks to a game are not mind blowing at all these days, all you gain is frames. Diminishing returns for sure.
