Benefits? I don't think there are any.
There is no performance reason, it happens because there is excess fuel...because the ECU/Carb/whatever is expecting to need to use a large amount of fuel but you've suddenly closed throttle so it dumps in more than is required and excess goes into the exhaust. But there is no performance purpose for it (at least which I've heard given). If BMW wanted I'm sure they could prevent it from happening.
I guess we're gonna get stuck on semantics here, on what deliberate means.
Absolutely hate the whole pop bang map that seems to be prevalent in this day and age.
Where I live there is a young fella, just recently got himself a normal golf but he’s had it wrapped with a great big yellow stripes in the middle of the car. Looks kinda nice I guess, not my cup of tea. But this retard has somehow managed to get a pop and bang map on his car and it sounds horrendous.
During the day I don’t mind it but **** sakes in the middle of the night when me and the missus are trying to sleep and this idiot is bombing it up and down our road with his crappy sounding exhaust is annoying. Got to the point where I called the police and just told them and they said they would look into it. Didnt expect anything to happen.
But interestingly haven’t heard that pile of crap bombing up and down my road the last few weeks.
Benefits? I don't think there are any.
Ohhh, you mean that stupid 'woooooooo' noise modded ***an acronym I know that I shouldn't be posting*** make? Yeah, I don't like that either!
Edit... WTF. I'm not going to edit that. Apparently 'T D s' is a sweary?
Testing:
***an acronym I know that I shouldn't be posting***
Interesting... No idea what thats meant to mean... What about:
BMW 525 ***an acronym I know that I shouldn't be posting***
Oh, old diesel BMW's don't exist anymore according to OcUK.
Paging @Gibbo whats this ill thought out nonsense please?
Is it something to do with Trumpton?
Probably because no-one in Speakers Corner is mature enough to have a political discussion without every other post turning into a childish argument about 'Trump Derangement Syndrome'.
11pm onwards. Why do you think it’s acceptable to be popping and banging at that time when people are sleeping???What time of night are we talking, Victor?

I've had a couple of cars that made a racket one was using bike carbs, the other was an RS turbo on MFI.
Always did my best to drive quiet at night, which on the RS was avoiding boost. On the bike carbs just keeping the revs low and smooth. It was sudden acceleration and fast let off that made the noise.
Same reason snow flakes got filtered essentially
Surely the bangs will do damage after a while?
It will probably destroy the cat eventually. Maybe damage other parts of the exhaust.
Could cause damage to the cat yeah but you would probably need to have pretty aggressive pops and bangs to do that. The usual little spits and farts you get from a hot hatch probably wont do much.
Probably not in any measurable way, no.
Spark cut launch control and rev limiter like I have on my V70R has potential to do damage to the turbo etc. after a while though.
doesn't the flow of the exhaust gases have an effect on the BHP too? surely that's interrupted too?
It only happens on the over-run, i.e when you aren't accelerating, so it makes no difference.
