F1 2009 Season discussion/development thread

Great speed from Barrichello and BrawnGP.
In terms of outright speed, he does seem to be showing the way to Button.

I think Alonso must've thought to himself, I cannot allow a Brazillian and an Englishman to come to Spain and dominate. Its good to see that he is able to compete with the BrawnGP cars.

Its funny how people are talking about McLaren clawing some speed back: yes, Hamilton does seem closer to the BrawnGP cars, but he is still over 1s off their pace. In F1 terms, thats a MASSIVE gap. I seriously think that McLaren are going to go into the first race of the season, struggling to get a single point.

Furthermore, for some reason on this board, people want to see how Hamilton performs in a slow car. Well, he will be slow, but he will be much faster than his team-mate, just as he was last year, in a faster car. If your car is fundamentally slow, you can't expect Hamilton to make up such a big gap, given that he will be up against the BrawnGP cars (which right now, look untouchable), the Ferraris and Alonso (who is probably a better driver than him).

Where in all reality would he go?

Ferrari: No space there as the next opening will probably be for Alonso. I also don't think he'd be a fit there.

He is arguably the fastest driver in F1 right now (not the best), so he will fit. But driving alongside Alonso isnt something that he, Alonso or Ferrari would like to deal with.

BrawnGP: ...

Yep, forget them.

Renualt/Toyota:

If Alonso leaves, that could open up a seat for Hamilton.

Any of the others: With the exception of BMW ...

BMW are looking VERY strong and maybe an option for Hamilton, if he decides to leave McLaren.

That would be a backwards move. With all due respect to RBR, they are not a title winning team. And I think if they do ever win the title, they will probably do so with Vettel.

If he wants a good chance of getting another WDC or two then McLaren are his only hope as things currently stand.

By the end of the season, things can change. Right now, he will have to work hard and see how far McLaren can progress. What he doesnt want to do is get bogged down for 2-4 years, in a McLaren that is slow, as this really would be a waste of talent/ability.

So when Button broke a contract for a better option he was roundly regard as a ****. Yet if Hamilton does it it's ambition?

If Button joined Bar/Honda for ambition, then I absolutely support him. I would never hold it against someone, if they changed employers to progress their career forwards. It shows ambition.

Alonso went because Mclaren were just as glad to get rid of him, especially after grassing the team up.

The contract was broken, nonetheless.

I doubt it would be as easy for Hamilton to leave.

This is correct.

But if Hamilton digs his heals and speaks with his step-father (Ron), I'm pretty sure he would be released. No sports team wants to hang on to a driver/player who doesnt want to drive/play for them anymore.

I do feel though, that Hamilton would need to be offered a very good seat (probably Ferrari) for him to risk leaving the McLaren team.

Problem is, will renault be in F1 for the long haul? There have been constant rumours and rumblings that they may pull out (with renault having to take state aid etc.). If they do it wouldn't be the first (or second) time they quit F1.

True, but I doubt that McLaren will be bogged down for that long, at most this season - and if it looks bad they'd be smarter to test test test and bring the fight back in 2010.

I still don't get why, with Paddy Lowe being on the OWG, they got this car so very, very wrong

Love it :D

Wonder how many of the Hamilton fanboys on here will go quiet when he wins sod all this season.

I sure hope so. Poor performance seperates the Fans from the Fanboys. Fanboys support winning people and flame like hell to prove they are the best thing since sliced bread, untill things look down then they run to the next big thing. True fans stand by there driver.

Me, I support British, so im no fanboy of any one driver, I just like to see British teams and drivers do well, although im only just managing to convince myself that McLaren is still British...

tbh you have a lot of teams to choose from :D
Mclaren,Renault,Redbull,Williams,brawn Gp & force india...
Your gonna have to grow 4 more arms to wave all the flags....

Fanboy!!!!!

Sorry, I should probably let that go shouldn't I? :o

:p Renault are one of my least favourite teams on the grid :D

However I am really hoping that all teams are within 0.5 seconds of each other and we can have many great races where all teams have similar speed. I would hate for it to be like usual and only 2 teams with any chance of winning a race

But they are not honda

True enough....but (there's always a but!)

Personally, i've always supported/followed anything with a Honda in it. It all boils down to my old man having bought nothing but Honda's as long as I can remember. Childish, but then I was a child when I first started watching in awe at F1 back when I was 8, and Mansell blew his tyre in '86. I still remember crying over it :D

After that it was marvelling at Senna/Prost, following the Jordan team (just because of the attitude) and marvelling/being annoyed at Schumachers domination.

I was really chuffed when BAR joined the fray a few years back now, and even more so when the team morphed (unfortunately as it turned out) into a fully fledged veggie-eating works team. It's around the BAR time when I started following Button (I had no interest before that in him admittedly).

BrawnGP may not "be" Honda, but i'll still follow them as such as it still has vast amounts of Honda DNA, and Button's still there. I don't believe they'll be challenging for the title, but they'll be more than ok come the end of the season. Anything is good enough at this stage, i've spend 3 months endlessly pressing F5 on various F1 forums waiting for updates on the future of the team :)

Hard to explain really, I dont follow F1 the same way I follow Footie, in the sense I just support 1 team in Footie, yet...I find myself (always have) more interested in all aspects of F1 than Football.
