F1 2009 Season discussion/development thread

tbh you have a lot of teams to choose from :D
Mclaren,Renault,Redbull,Williams,brawn Gp & force india...
Your gonna have to grow 4 more arms to wave all the flags....

Renault's F1 operations are based in the UK, sure, but the brand and ownership is very much French.

Force India is owned by an Indian. It's only based in the UK because that's where 90% of the F1 skills base is. The other 10% is in Italy ;)

Hard to explain really, I dont follow F1 the same way I follow Footie, in the sense I just support 1 team in Footie, yet...I find myself (always have) more interested in all aspects of F1 than Football.

I was explaining this to my misses the other day. I generally find following the details of the sport is what gives me my interest. I dont follow any one team, or driver exclusively.

I enjoy seeing great driving whom-ever it is that is doing it, exciting races, and daring strategies.

F1 interests me as a sport wholesale, and I just want exciting seasons. :)

Thats said, I do want British drivers to do well. I also have a picture on the wall at home of Button just after Debut win, with his face lit up like an over-excited school kid!

Aye.

All the missus says about my F1 fan status is:

1) You're driving up to Jerez again? Pulling ANOTHER sickie?
2) Turn down the tele or watch it in the bedroom, that constant "weeeooooww, weeeeooooww" is annoying.
3) Why is our 2 year old daughter more interested in "red beep-beeps" instead of dolls and teddys?

Looking very good for Brawn GP. Any news on what stopped Button yesterday? Im quite looking forward to Hamilton being in the midfield, we know he can overtake and that he isnt one for not taking risks. Could give some exciting racing.

can anybody explain the sudden turn around in Honda / Brawn GP's form ?

is it just everybody else is pants and fannying about ?

They never stopped working on the car despite the teams doubt, they still had the resources to build and develop the car, plus they had a decent head start. They commited to the 2009 season towards the end of the 2007 season. It may also be the case that they were lucky that their chassis is a great match for the McLaren engine that has gone in at the last minuite and they've hit upon a winning formula.

What's apparent from the past two testing days however is that they are no long dominating the testing and a couple of other teams are catching up with them. We might see some race wins from them this year but that's all we can hope for, I wouldn't put any bets on a title for them this year.

I put it down to the decision Brawn made early last year to stop working on the 2008 car because he quickly saw it was a dog and instead concentrate on the 2009 car. This I expect has given them 4-6 months extra development time on many of the other teams. During 2008 they were very well funded and Brawn knows how to run an F1 team and build a fast car. This he did.

The new Mercedes engine is probably a lot better than the old Honda one so that alone might explain a good chunk of the relative improvement from the 2008 Honda.

The problem will be keeping up with the richest teams over the next year or two if Brawn do have to significantly cut budgets and staff.

No hard and fast explanation, just pointers.

A few I can think of re BrawnGP itself:
  • Fixing of ex-Honda's aero/wind tunnel. Looks as if re-calibration has seen wind tunnel tests prove more accurate in the real world.
  • Much more time in development. Honda gave up on '08 very early on.
  • Therefore, clean slate on '09 design
  • Ross Brawn
  • Mercedes engine being a better unit overall
Others are either sandbagging to an extent, or indeed having problems. I still dont believe the Brawns are the fastest cars come melbourne, but they wont be anywhere near the bottom of the timesheets.

Remember though, Jerez is much less dependent on aero performance than Catalunya so I would expect to see Renault with their beefed up engine getting closer this week.

Maybe you should lobby for a Gibraltar GP a la Monaco? Pit straight at the airport (plus Bernie can fly all his chums in) and then up Queensway Quay?

On second thoughts, I doubt the missus would be impressed, especially as you wouldn't be able to turn the "weeeeoww, weeeeow's" down. :D

Button in under 1:18, Hamilton a second behind the Williams. McLaren are going to need something special just to get in the points.

Hamiltonian is doing very well for a complete rookie :D

Maybe BrawnGP wont win a gp but I really hope they do well esp in the early fly-away races

Yes they where able to scrap the 08 car very early indeed, and it looks like its paying dividends now - but even so it looks like its completely legit timings on two different tracks, so good on them :)
