F1 2009 Season discussion/development thread

Massa by comparison made probably 3x as many noteworthy "mistakes" as that over the course of the season.

Yeah, Massas' kryptonite may play another big part this season, but to be fair the pit incidents weren't really his fault and he had some great drives when it wasn't raining.

We can call last seasons Massa vs Hamilton an even playing field to be honest, as it was all overshadowed by the silly (or not, depending on your view) penalties.

I was looking forward to this season, I was expecting more contraversial changes. It was fine the way it was, and the alternative was more attractive than this medal malarky. Sounds like some sort of classroom reward system to make the bad kids feel even more **** about themselves. No gold stars for Hammy by the looks of their testing times.

Eh? Not this again :p

Massa was gifted one win. Hamilton was docked a win.

Massa was **** compared to Hamilton last season. He only won by 1pt because Massa kept being gifted points or Hamilton being docked points (ignoring the balls up that was Canada of course ;))

Am i getting something wrong, i thought points were still in place? Its just the driver with the most wins decides the title if points are level. Is that not correct? If thats right i think that it's the right idea. If points are level then the person with the most 1sts wins. Simple!

Obviously, Spa was a joke and Hamilton won that race. Last years championship went to the right person eventually!

No.

Driver with most wins now wins outright. If they are tied by wins, it then falls on points. Everyone else is ranked by points.

There have been seasons decided (effectively) by number of wins rather than outright points. 1988 for example - Prost scored more points than Senna, but only the best 11 (I think?) scores counted and Senna had one more win than Prost.

But going solely on number of wins to decide the title is a dumb idea.

You would think that, it is how it used to work and it worked well. Not anymore though! BBC news had Martin Brundle on commenting on the decision, only caught the end of it so didnt hear everything he had to say.

That's how it used to work until today. :D

So in theory, drivers competing are going to want to win races rather than settle for 2nd or 3rd.

Will it not create better races?

Weren't the FIA considering making all tracks undercover to remove the unfair advantage "other" drivers had when driving in the rain?

Haha!

I dont believe it will. Say over an 11 race season Massa wins 6 of those races closely followed by Button in 2nd. Button wins 5 of the others and Massa is nowhere due to silly mistakes taking home nothing not even any points. Under the old system Massa would have 60 points, Button 90 and taking the title. Now under the new system Massa even though he made a royal ****-up and had 5 miserable performances is WDC and Button who was clearly the most consistent driver gets 2nd for his efforts even though his has 50% more points.

Yeh doesnt make sense if you put in those terms. Suppose we wont know until the season kicks off. Not long now tho, is end of march for Aus? 27th or something?

Just to put it in some kind of perspective, I used the new rules to re-write the the history of the last 10 seasons.

The only two that were affected were 2008, Massa would have been champion and 1999, Irvine would have been champion.

i hope someone does say 'screw it' to making engines last and win 8 races then just stop. then they will see how stupid they are and change them back.
