F1 2009 Season discussion/development thread

One problem I can see with this is say a front runner loses his front wing in the first corner. Normally he'd have limped back to the pits, then in most cases, charged through the pack to try and get up into the points. Why would any front runner want to do this now? Sure for team constructor points, but are they really going to drive as hard as they would have if the points were going to help them get the drivers championship? I doubt it.

Come on - think people. Why does anyone other than 2 or 3 potential title contenders race? People will still race as hard as ever - the guy leading the race might crash out at any moment, the points might settle the championship...

I see nothing in this announcement that will decrease how hard people race, nothing. But in some situations, 10 laps to go and sitting in a safe 2nd place, this new rule is likely to make the 2nd guy push on.

If someone is a lap down and dead last due to a first corner incident, they are not going to race the nuts off the car in the hope of possibly getting to 5th or 6th, which in the past would have been worth it.

I can see your point that if someone is in 2nd they will push for the win however.

We'll just have to see how it pans out.

You've mentioned the one benefit, you need to look how many negatives there are to this idea and then weigh up whether you think it is a good one. If only the FIA/Bernie had done that. I can't believe some of the decisions the FIA have made today, the budget cap is another absolutely crazy one. Mclaren for example have a massive infrastructure/CFD facilities etc, what if a new team want to develop a comparable operation? It gives the bigger teams a massive advantage unless everyone starts with a blank sheet of paper.

Exactly! I don't see the negatives people are going on about here. Can someone summarise these supposed negatives?

Of course they will - why wouldn't they? Points are points, points may decide the championship anyway and points WILL decide the constructors. If any driver in that situation didn't "race the nuts of the car" the team boss should be complaining and they don't deserve to be champ anyway.

Had to quote this off another forum

------
My-Mate-In-The-Pub John: "Slarti, you follow Formula One don't you?"
Slartibartfast: "Yes.."
John: "Can you tell me why this bloke Button is World Champion?"
Slartibartfast: "Because he won the most races."
John: "Ok, but this Alonso chap won quite a lot too, didn't he?"
Slartibartfast: "Yes, second only to Button. Bloody good drivers, those two."
John: "So why did Massa come second in the Championship if Alonso won more races?"
Slartibartfast: "Ah, that's because he scored more points than Alonso."
John: "But he scored more points than Button as well, didn't he?"
Slartibartfast: "Yes, but Button won more races than Massa."
John: "So did Alonso."
Slartibartfast: "Er, yes, but that's not how it works..."
John: "Liverpool are looking good for the Champions' League again..."

I personally think its the correct way to go, although Hamilton winnning was incredible, it was also stupid that Massa with more wins wasnt champion at the end of it.

This has to be the most ridiculous idea ever. This season looks like it is going to have more random race winners than any season in recent times.

I think all sorts of folks will be winning races as they find their cars are good at some tracks but not so good at others, and all the other variables in the equation (KERS, new tyre degradation to be learnt etc etc) which can easily affect the race result.

It just opens a whole raft of statistical possibilities which will devalue the sport if they occur. This type of scoring system is worse than the BBC's Dancing on Ice show!!!

Eh? Not this again :p

Massa was gifted one win. Hamilton was docked a win.

Massa was **** compared to Hamilton last season. He only won by 1pt because Massa kept being gifted points or Hamilton being docked points (ignoring the balls up that was Canada of course ;))

Why? Hamilton was more consistent over the course of the season, not to mention he had that very controversial decision at Spa which stripped him of a win and handed it to Massa. That incident alone should demonstrate how stupid this idea is.

Can you imagine the Premier League doing something similar? It's called a 'season' for a reason, it's not some knock out competition.

D'you want me to point out all the other times when Hamilton was **** or can we take it as read that both men had poor races last year?

It also means (I think) the drivers standings should be organized by race wins, right until the end of the last race, when its organized by:

1st place, guy with race wins.
Everyone else, by points.

How gutting (have to lol here) if you've got say 3 or 4 wins, in contention for the WDC, then drop to 6th / 7th because of your points.

I'm going to hold out some hope in that this change might get reversed before the season actually starts. There is no need for it to be brought in with so many other changes too! Atleast wait a season to see how the new overtaking regulations work out!

Bahrain he made a mistake with the launch map then clipped his wing ever so slightly and then lost it entirely. Exept for forgetting to select his launch map... the ensuing events could have happened to anyone.

Canada... :p

France after the balls up that was Canada he tried to overtake Vettel but ended up just cutting the chicane and got a drive-thru for it.

Japan he locked up his wheels and, apparently, killed about 10 human babies in the process hence earning himself a drive-thru.

Massa by comparison made probably 3x as many noteworthy "mistakes" as that over the course of the season.
