1) The planks are no longer wood. They're made from a carbon fibre that is designed to wear.
2) The planks when fitted are 10mm thick - at the end of the race if they are found to be less than 9mm think, the car is disqualified.
3) The plank has several titanium fixings and wear plates in it - you tend to see sparks from them occasionally.
4) The best place to see where the plank has rubbed on the ground is the back straight at Brazil. It's a crappy surface on the place and you can see pale stripes across the track at the end of the straight - thats where the car has bottomed out.
